Jakob Nielsen, web usability guru, says that humans that didn't pay attention to movement in our peripheral vision were eaten by sabre tooth tigers so (ignoring for the moment that humans and sabre tooth tigers weren't coincidental ;-) moving or flashing text or objects are a distraction and shouldn't be used. If forced to choose I'd rather have BIG than flashing, rotating annoying thingees.
Yeah, this is really annoying. I can live with headers, and trailers, but between every post is not only visually irritating, but obviously slows down the entire system for all that additional crap to load. Response time is much, much slower. I'm also seeing the same ads repeating on the same page multiple times. Ughhhh. Definitely cutting back my checks of the forum now. I really don't have anything against a subscription model, Trainorders does that and it's been fine. If the object of this experiment is to soften us up for accepting that as an alternative, count me in.
We're looking into it guys - I don't think it's intentional so hang in there until we track down what's causing it. Thanks for being patient -Mike
Folks, We are back online. We were hacked and someone added code to the site to display ads all over the place. We believe that we have gotten rid of it and so we are back on. We apologize for the delay. Fixing this has cost us some funds, so we will soon run a mini-telethon to try and raise a bit of money. Again, we apologize and hope this does not happen again. Charlie
I thought to hack a trainboard one needed a hatchet. I remember when that was the case. What was it Mark Twain said about all the modern inconveniences?
If there is a bright side to all of this....AdBlockPlus, which I use everywhere, gave me absolutely zero ads of any kind, and I visit here at least once an hour.
I did not see ads either, so also probably due to AdBlock. However, I missed Trainboard while you were fixing the problem, so a big thank you for fixing it. I decided it was about time to stop freeloading and start being a supporter. Definitely worth $24 per year, even though I live in the UK. Rob Pearce (aka ViperBugloss)
