It's to do with how cold air masses can flow down from Canada. What we always called "Alberta Clippers", but now the media has decided to rename and popularize by calling them "polar vortexes". (Vortices?) Anyhow, when a huge cold air mass east of the Canadian Rockies, north of the US border, flows west and southwest, across the mountains. It flows down out the mouth of the Fraser River in BC, and causes havoc around western Washington, or southwest across eastern Washington, then down the Columbia. It's not at all anything new.

Well, yes. Winter. But this is an extreme event, where a mass of much colder air quickly sweeps down. Instead of a gradual change.

There was a great line used in a recent episode of "Hawaii 50" . The character who portrays a former Chicago cop was with the rest of the cast investigating a homocide. When they arrived at the scene the ex Chicago cop asked where the victim was. Kono replied that they would have to wear special gear since where it was was "sub-zero". The ex-Chicago cop declined to wear any protective gear and said "in Chicago we call "sub-zero" "April"! LOL

I've seen it snow here in every month except July. One reason for the old traditional saying about our two seasons, July and winter.

Back before my health really went south, I could be found outside shoveling snow in just a T shirt. The activity kept me warm enough, until it got down closer to ten above, or unless it was a heavy wet snow. I've seen many neighbors standing outside in snow, wearing just shorts, sneakers, and a T shirt- Just shooting the breeze with someone. A person just seems to get used to it. These days my body creaks and groans too much to do that any more.

While we're on the subject of weather, I can bring trains back into it. A number of years ago
I bought a large poster size print of a painting of the Santa Fe "Blue Goose". It portrays the locomotive traveling at night through a Kansas thunderstorm. It is quite a dramatic painting incorporating two of my favorite things, a steam locomotive and a good old fashioned Midwest T-storm.

Not sure if this is the kind of thing you're looking for or not, but doing some looking today I came across a vacancy notice from Ft Carson for a conductor. Just throwing it out there in case.
