An August announcement from Atlas will be of interest to N scalers who model Santa Fe in 1920s or 30s, or who model railroads that would handle a Santa Fe car. Atlas announced it will be coming out in December with an N-scale USRA double-sheathed boxcar in several roadnames including ATSF. (on www.atlasrr.com)

When I clicked on the Santa Fe picture, I thought "good news and bad news". The good news is that it will be a great looking model if it comes out anything like the illustration. I have seen several photos of the Santa Fe BX-2 and the model picture is dead on.

The bad news is no problem with Atlas great quality or accuracy... It is just that the prototype was rebuilt before the time period I model, a personal problem.
Atlas' new Santa Fe USRA double-sheathed boxcar was announced to come in numbers ATSF 38749 and 38850. Those numbers would be series 37001-39534 BX-2 blt 1919, gone after 1942 according to Santa Fe Railways Listing of Freight Cars by Class and Car Number 1906-1991, (Occhiello).
The appearance in the Atlas announcement conforms closely to prototype photos in Santa Fe Boxcars 1869-1953, (Dobyne)

For a roster of railroads that had USRA double-sheath 40' boxcars, see Model Railroading May88 p.34 (Note: Model Railroad-ING, not Model Railroad-ER.

Interesting to note that Atlas is modeling three boxcars that use the USRA underframe-- the original USRA single-sheath box, the original USRA double-sheath box,and the steel rebuilds of USRA cars.
