Hi Guys, I got to thinking that some people might want Background ADM Grain Elevators for use up against the backdrop of a layout to take up less space then the full size kits. Im in the process of building one that is about half the width of the full size. I've made this one into a larger size then the ones that I usually build as well. By larger size I mean longer then what I usually build. This one has silos on both sides of the main structure. 4 to the left, and 8 to the right. The left silos have the conveyor housing, the right 8 silos will have piping. The first 4 silos will have overhead piping with supports from the top of the main structure, the last 4 silos will have a pipe line running down the first 4 with one pipe going to each of the last 4 silos. Details like safety railings around each of the 3 roofs of the main structure, caged ladders connecting the roofs (main structure and right silo structure), a platform from the "door to nowhere" with a caged ladder leading to the roof, railings all the way down the 8 silo roof, and a caged ladder between the 4th and 5th silos running to ground level. Here are some pictures showing the structure as it is now. Right now I am about half way complete with it. The left silo structure is complete, the main house is mostly complete and just needs the railings, caged ladders, and platform for the door, and the right silo structure has just been assembled and still needs to be painted and then needs the railings and caged ladder installed. The pipeline still needs to be constructed, and the overhead piping/supports built and painted. Just wanted to show you guys what its looking like as of now, this will be going up for sale once Im done with it, so if your interested, let me know
LOL no worries I just finished the pipeline for the last 4 silos, painting them now and will take some pictures in a little and post them up
Cindy, PVC plumbing pipe from a home improvement store comes in several diameters that work for silos. Some sheet styrene would work to make the main structure and the silo roof. Add Grandt Line or Tichy windows and doors and you would be well on the way to a grain elevator at a fraction of the cost of the kit. Details however, might be a reason to choose the kit. Considering what you have showed us of your skills you could scratchbuild an elevator.
I was fascinated with this project. I think he's doing a great job! It's so big! I've never tried doing anything that big. I saw these structures once when I was briefly in Kansas. Very impressive structures!!! Anyway not appropriate for the northeast modeler. I am thinking about trying to build a factory building. I'm looking at some pictures now. I like the Walthers modular parts but wow do they add up ! I would need lots of them but I can't afford it right now. Anyway I'm still planning. Candy
Thank you for the compliments Candy, I appreciate them This elevator that im building now is actually not that big, well compared to some of the others that I have done. I did one in N scale for a customer a while back that was quite the beast! Here are some quick pics of it: Im also working on another large Grain Elevator in HO scale for another customer. This one is about as large as the N scale one in the sense of number of silos. 16 Silos on the left side, and 32 silos on the right side:
There are many grain elevators with fewer silos. And silos have different diameters. But you are right, they are not appropriate for your area. Small grain elevators would be though. And yes i meant Candy though I typed Cindy.
LOL Candy, Yes that White Cargill Grain Elevator is N scale, the Gray ADM one is HO scale For the first four silos i decided to do another pipeline for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th silos and then did a pipe with supports for the 1st. Ill post some pictures up in a few minutes here. I dont have the railings and caged ladders in, and I wont be able to get them in till next week, so im going to go ahead and sell this one without them and then make another when those parts come in. I could use a little extra money right now. I also added some decals on last night, 3 ADM Logos on 3 sections of the Mill
