I just watch the news tonight and they were telling the CN had an augmentation of 50% of the number of derailments. There was 53 in 2001 and 94 this year. According to the preliminary report, they were flaws with the inspection of trains, brake tests and rail maintenance . CP only had 8% more derailments this year.
From what we've picked up down here, there had been a few more problems on CN. Now this confirms it. Did they surmise any reason for the increased difficulties?? That would be very interesting to know! Solutions?? Boxcab E50
No, they didn't mention anything more except the inspection that took place and the statistics of the CN. Could the aging of equipment be the cause?
I'd start with E. Hunter Harrison. CN has been ordered to shorten the length of their trains on a stretch of track in Alberta where they had a major derailment in August.
I did not say the length of the trains is the issue. Try this, 2 crewmen killed due to lack of proper maintenance; http://www.tsb.gc.ca/en/media/communiques/rail/2005/comm_r03v0083.asp
lack of service and maintenence is the cause. i know the track gangs now have to cover more track with less manpower.. same thing in the diesel shops. they want all the inspections done quicker, more defects are being signed "ok for service" by management. the present upper management is running cn into the ground just to get the stock value up..
Aren't most railroads neglecting equipment and such with the increase in traffic and decrease in manpower across the board? Also......That's a shame for the Red Green Show. Love it!
Ah yes. That infamous "deferred maintenance." Which makes the financial bottom line look better. Temporarily. Then it all falls apart. Remember the Rock? Milwaukee Road? Boxcab E50
Yeah, deferred maintenance caused us some problems in the UK a year or two back. Cost a packet to get back to a reasonable condition.
I've never understood the management philospohy of deferred maintenance. At the end, you are in worse shape. All it does, if anything, is a temporary spike up in cash flow. Boxcab E50
2 derailments in one day http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20051207.wxbcrail07/EmailBNStory/National/
As we now start the more severe weather months, it will be interesting to see how these weeks pass. And then the spring thaws, with those normal soft roadbeds, etc., etc.... Boxcab E50
