No, I haven't heard from Rick in a long time. He must be hiding under his bed scared of all the earthquakes, fires in all the Western Pacific States. Talk about the ring of fire. Smoke coming right through Treasure Valley, Idaho, like we are the Chimney.

I've been lurking here wondering when I should jump back in.

Have you heard about the Amtrak Passenger Train Accident in Montana, today Septemeber 25,2021. A friend of mine in Big Bear Country called to see if I had head anything. I tried the internet and was looking for news here when I saw that Masseny had posted on this thread. Had to check it out.

Honestly I've been waiting for the smoke to settle down. Lot's of luck on that one. I need to rebuild the valence and get it installed before I can finish shove the layout back-up against the wall. I've been fiddling with the layout. Wiring for the most part.

Today, watching some Football. College games can at time be more interesting to watch then the Pro's.

Anyway, I'm still here. Kicking and stomping, butting heads and in general making a nuisance out of myself.
    Thanks for asking.

Oh, and don't get me started on earthquakes. I grew up in Hollister, California. What was then known as the Earthquake some thing or other. I keep thinking Earthquake Center. Somewhere further south a place is known as the Earthquake Capital. The Hayward fault was extremely busy during those years. We used to tease that's what rocked us to sleep at night.

Do you know how to tell a drunk during an earthquake. He's the only one walking straight.

Shake it baby, shake that boot-ie. And you thought Rock and Roll started in Nashville, Tn.

Take care and we will visit more as I get restarted on the repair and restoration of the H&P Railroad.

    Later!

Good to hear from ya Rick!

We here got lucky this year with the fires, WA didn’t have any big ones, and the big ones around us didn’t send smoke around the Puget Sound like they had the last few years. Sorry to hear you are getting smoked out.

Soccer the other futbal. As kids we thought it was a girls game. See how things change.

Talking about smoke from the wildfires. In talking to friends left behind in Big Bear Country. They've gotten smoke from their own fires. No one seems to be getting away without it. Sad, when I think about those who have lost homes.

I think I found out how the natives learned to smoke a salmon. Just set it outside for a day or two and it will be smoked. Like it or not.

Thanks guys for the come backs.

    Small world.

Girls Soccer is the best. As good as Beach Volley Ball.

We had a bit of smoke here this morning as well. Grease fire in the neighbors kitchen.

Allow me to respond to current events the fires, smoke and such things. Just some fodder for the thought process.

The fires started with a heavy duty electrical storm. More recent fires have been man made. The forest aren't being cared for as in brush removed, trees trimmed and old snags removed. Most of the service roads the CFDA and USFS once used to get into the forest to fight the fires are now closed and unusable. I know, Say What??

Now to the smoke from the fires. For those who have upper respiratory problems the smoke can cause sinusitis, asthma and other more dramatic complications .

I can only share a view we actually overheard in Big Bear Country coming from some extremist/fanatical green minded (expletive of a less then complimentary vernacular)... !! Can't use those expletives here. They really don't like the mountain communities and would like to see them burned out. I say what? Yep, I overheard that. Shaking my head in wonderment?

In the past 20 years, USFS has literally bull dozed private homesteads into the ground, while the occupant was in town getting supplies. True story. Most mines, cattle ranches, and small communities and assorted out buildings have been closed down - bulldozed, in the name of conservation.

I wonder sometimes as to what kind of a world I was born into?

    Just food for thought.

Have a couple of friends that are pilots for Delta and they have been telling me about how bad the smoke has been and how far east it is travelling. I know enough made it to Atlanta this year that you could see the difference in the air. Can only imagine how bad that makes it up your way Sir Rick!

    Mr. BNSF Fan,

Many of the California residents feel that things have been taken to far. Even the head of the USFS Fire Boss, in a conversation with Potus, said they needed to put a cap on lawsuits by the environmentalist, to allow them to go into the forest and groom it. One small blip on the evening news and then they had it shut down. Potus stopped in Idaho for a brief visit at the firefighters, fire air camp. Non productive, I'm sure.

The forest with all the dead and dry fuel is ready to burn.

All the work and emphasis on quality air in CA., if you get my drift.

Do you remember Smokey The Bear and the hat he wore?

Now back to working on the train layout.

Except for the fires, it's much the same in northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan.
Can't wait until everything has to be electric.

My trains on the layout are all electric. Does that count?

I hope we never get to a day, when it becomes mandatory to purchase a specific type of automobile. It should be a choice thing.

Electric cars aren't a new thing. These were built right along with the first gasoline fired cars. The problem was and still is, how to charge the batteries and who would be responsible for doing that. See Jay Leno's Garage he has a bunch of old electric as well as steam auto antiques.

We simply don't have the infrastructure of power and transmission lines to support more use of electricity. It's going to be a delicate balancing act. Even in Idaho we have occasional Brown outs.

    We aren't ready...yet!

I would love to see an electric F350 that would work in -30F with the wind howling and snow a driftin. Turn up some heat in the cab, and your range just dropped a LOT. Vehicular choice is a necessity.

The smoke did get bad here this summer, felt bad for those with breathing issues. And for those loosing their homes to fire. We looked at buying up north of Boise in the mountains when I lived there. It was dry, dry country, and the development had it's own fire truck and water truck and an extra tank up the hill.

Now back to the trains.........get 'er done Rick!
