Can't find my notes on this- Anyone have a date for when these were first used in North America?

    Do you mean this "Shorty"?

I've asked in the Ry-Ops-Ind list for it. I've got a few answers:
"Tanks cars are specifically designed and sized to
match the commodity that they are intended to carry. The old MDC
shorty that Wolfgang has is a nominal 10k gallon non-insulated,
non-presssure car that was typically used for corn syrup and
    gasoline. "
    and
"I too very much like the "shorty" tank cars and have several of the Walthers shorty cars and at least one of the MDC cars in your photo URL below. From what I've read over the years, these cars were built to serve customers who just could not take a full-load tank car of 80-100 tons of product (storage tanks too small, spacing of unloading or loading ports, etc). Some of the products so shipped were oils & lubricants, corn syrup and (I have a color slide to prove it) tomato paste."

The Pabst Beer can car? I think it was around the 1970s, sold by Walters, back when they have Small cans of beer ;)

Im sure these started coming out in the mid to late sixties. Ive seen bunches of pictures similar cars that Jim Sands photographed in Iowa back in the late 60's.

Yes. That is the style car in question. I'm fairly certain it was around 1968. But cannot find where I filed my notes.

I have the following. They are from my friend, the late Jim Sands. For anyone who might wonder, I do have his written permission to display them on groups.

Note the earliest one is dated 1968. Which my modeling time frame is early 1968. No ACI labels. (Boy were those a PITB!) No lube stencils, etc. Was 1968 their first year?

When did the ACI lables first appear? when did they go away?

I don't recall the exact year when the mandate required all freight cars to have them displayed. Believe some cars had them as early as 1967. As you can see, the picture dated 1968 does not have any.

They were dumped in 1978. Why? They were too finicky. Had to be applied perfectly. Could not be dirty. The slightest edge curl, etc, and the reader wouldn't pick up data properly.

I recall many hours of trying to get them "just right."
