1967 brought some big changes to the Great Northern. A new paint scheme known as the "Big Sky Blue" scheme was introduced. The "Empire Builder" not only was being repainted in the new paint but other changes came to the train. The Post Office discontinued using RPO cars that year.No more RPO on trains anywhere. One dome coach, the Ranch Car, and some Pullmans and the "Coulee" Obs cars were withdrawn from the train. The "Coulee" series Obs cars were quickly converted to 68 seat coaches. The round end was squared off with a standard car end. A ladies room was installed on both sides of the car where the round end had been.
Somewhere around here, I have an article from a Seattle newspaper. It was all about the new paint scheme.
Well, all my memories are of a trip from Seattle to St. Paul in 1961. It was still in the glorious orange and green.
