BN BN TEBC-6

on the cab roof of the Bn TEBC6's there is what looks like an air conditoner, but i find it hard to belive that BN fitted air con to slugs and nothing else does anyone know what it is and have a good photo of it??

Actually, I recall reading somewhere that they are air-conditioned. It actually makes pretty good sense, since they are fitted with control stands, and the crew would operate the set from the TEBC-6, away from the noise, dust and fumes of the mother unit.

 

You are correct, gentlemen. There are a couple of TEBC6s that call Cherokee Yard here in Tulsa home. They both have A/C units on the roof. Problem is, the fan is so darned loud in the cab that it makes hearing the radio pretty difficult. I listened to an engineer running one when they first appeared here, and all you could hear in the background was a roar.

I have shots of them, even the one that was just repainted in Heritage I, along with its mother unit SD38P. Problem is, they're not scanned.

how come they didnt fit air con to the mother units (SD38P) as these were rebuilt at the same time as the slugs both by VMV, was it just a test to try the air con out?

 

The SD38P mother units probably didn't get A/C because BN probably felt the crew would spend more time in the TEBC-6. The slug has a control stand, so the crew can operate the consist from it. Also, the crew would probably like working in the slug better because of better visibility on account of the low-hood, end-cab arrangement, not to mention not having any noise/soot from a diesel prime mover.
