This old box car, #200147, is in Maintenance of way service, on Marias Pass, Montana. But what is it's intended use? Anyone have an idea?

I wonder if it might have been an automobile delivery car. I remember seeing tall off-set double-door cars on the New York Central where the autos were stacked vertically on frames loaded by fork-lifts.

What has me wondering is all the stuff on the roof. It looks like conduit.

I'm with Hytec. NYCS automobile boxcars had those double doors in order to get the cars inside.

Now a Snow Shed Maintenance Car perhaps? Generator inside the car, conduit and outlets for power tools?

I've seen some similar to this, up on Stevens Pass, for work in the Cascade Tunnel. It had railing though along the top.

Plenty of tunnels and snow sheds on Marias Pass. In the past, when I have seen this car, seems as though it is usually sitting in the yard at Essex.

I can't speak to it's use now, but it was not built for auto transport but instead for lumber loading. The double offset doors in a 6' and 7' configuration gave an opening of 13' to allow easier loading/unloading of PNW forest products.
