Here's a couple of pictures from my last trip out: This empty coal train had taken the siding, and appears that the engineers went to lunch! Here's a (rather poor) shot of the 2nd and 3rd units.... The track was completely hidden by woods on one side, so this was the best shot I could get! Very impressive pictures, Harold Even though I am a western roads fan, I really do like the CSX colours! ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.alancurtismodels.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery

The C44Acs are so thick in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Fields you cain't hardly swing a dead Chessie Cat without hittin'one! Nice Pix. ------------------ Cotton Belt: Runs like a Blue Streak

Here are Common lash-ups for coal traind here on the Cowen Coal Branch:: SD70MAc & SD70MAC or SD70MAC & C44AC (or other way around) or SD40-2 with another SD40-2 or SD40-2 with either an SD70MAC or a C44AC. Weird sightings: 4 GP38-2 s 1 SD80MAC (ex-conrail) 2 pairs of GP30/GP40-2 s ------------------ Appalachian & Atlantic Model Railroad "QUALITY at WORK with SAFTEY in MIND"
The SD70MACs have made some inroads into the Eastern Kentucky Coal Fields, but the predominate locomotive is the C44AC. There is still a pair of C40-8/C40-8Ws at Jackson for the Elkatawa Hill push.

I think CSX has long since rid themselves of (one of my favorite locomotives) GP30's. The GP40-2 "parent" is usally in the 69xx series, while the "slug" is in the 22xx or 23xx series. Every once in a while, I still see them around parts of North Carolina. Chessie ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors! Many of my recent "mainline" sightings have turned up sets with SD70/C44 or SD70/C60 lashups. It seems like in "the olden days", most CSX unit power was either ALL EMD or ALL GE, but rarely mixed like it is now. Am I imagining that (or just poor memory?) I mean the rebuilt GP30 s that are Road slugs. they are usually found paired with a GP40-2 ------------------ Appalachian & Atlantic Model Railroad "QUALITY at WORK with SAFTEY in MIND"

quote:
Originally posted by wt&c: I mean the rebuilt GP30 s that are Road slugs. they are usually found paired with a GP40-2

Darn! I was hoping a few GP30's had survived! I know a lot of the Chessie units had been rebuilt and were designated as GP30m. I'll try and get some slug set pictures scanned and posted this weekend. I realize we are getting off-topic, but here's one more picture of a GP35 based road slug. This shows how most of the doors are sealed off (as well as its poor paint job prep!)
