Hi; Thanks for the info, have you noticed any difference between the nicad/nimh versus akaline in colder weather?

As file sizes get larger, USB 2 becomes more critical. It takes a L-O-N-G time to download 2 Gbytes on USB 1. I usually plug the card in and go out for dinner.

Can't find anything so far. Any place in particular I can look for info? Somewhere in the System Info type files? (Using Win2K Pro.) Surely on a system so new, it's USB 2???

My laptop has slots for Smart Media and SD cards, but my new camera uses XD cards so I bought a card reader very cheaply off ebay. It plugs directly into my usb hub, or via the supplied cable into the usb sockets.

As to batteries, I have four sets (of 4) NiMH, I always take a spare set with me, but so far have never needed to change them whilst out taking pics. They last for ages!

You can snoop around in Device Manager but since your PC is only 4 months, don't even bother. I can assure you that it has USB 2.0.

Just search ebay ;) Got mine real cheap, but brand new.

What cards does your camera take?

    Alan-

It's a Fuji S5100 camera. Uses Fujifilm xD cards.

I worry about buying electronics via eBay. Have in the past looked. But see so many sellers with a lot of negatives. Is there someone you've found to be very reliable? Stand solidly behind their goods?

Instead of eBay, just google it. I'm seeing all sorts of card readers for about $10. Most of the bigger etailers are very reputable. I use B&H out of NYC.

Hmmm. Just a thought. Are these made so that they can be installed in a spare bay? Rather than externally? I have plenty of room in the case for that possibility.

I have a 10-in-1 from Dazzle that I got for $10 after a $10 rebate from Compusa. It is USB2.0. It goes on sale a few times a year. Dell has the same unit for $27.

Lexar and Sandisk also makes them and I know on the west coast Fry's have some generic brands for about $20.

They are commodity items. Buy by price. No difference.

Spare bay one are more expensive and hard to come by. You need to mail order from specialty computer places.

The external ones are quite small, the size of a deck of cards.

Anybody here, use a SunPak charger with its' batteries? If so, any troubles in keeping them charged?

If I charge those I have, and do not use the camera at all, in a week, they're so far down, that the camera won't function,

Sounds like your batteries are shot... Sometimes they die due to different issues, such as undercharging them initially!

    Harold-

I sure hope not. Although I fear this may be true. They are only a few months old. Barely used.

Mixed in with this thread, was talk about saving battery life, by downloading with the memory card out of the camera.

I have five ports in my printer. But none appeared useable for my xD type card. For some reason, the light was hitting these slots just right today. And I looked more closely. Darned if there isn't a two-in-one slot, and my memory card fits/works perfectly. So, I don't need to buy a seperate accessory, to do this job!

Like having the Missus yank the power cord, not that she read the instructions nor looked at the indicator lights, because she thought they had been plugged in long enough! [IMG]
