A friend gave me this old Lionel, which includes a 2-4-0 locomotive, tender, two cars, 16 sections of curved track, 12 sections of straight track, two switches and two power pacs. The loco is missing some parts but has the motor and gearbox. I don't know if it runs or not. Anyway, can anyone tell me how old this old toy is? Any information will be appreciated.
Bill, email me if the engine and or tender is metal or plastic, and, what is the number on the side of the engine? Also need the number on the side of each car. I can look it up for you in my book.
This site here: Postwar Lionel Does not list your wheel base but it does list the early engine numbers. It looks like yours has a 6300 designation. Is the body plastic or metal? [ December 16, 2005, 11:52 PM: Message edited by: traingeekboy ]
Jim- The classic post war Lionel period was 1945-1969. This is after that era. A number 8300 Santa Fe 2-4-0 Steamer. Made in 1976. In it's present state, doubt it has any value. Probably not worth fixing. Mint/new, it might bring in $20 or so? Boxcab E50
Yeah .. I did not think it was worth anything. I just wanted to find out how old it might be as I do not intend to sell it anyway .. just keep it on display at the Yreka Western RR museum. The body is plastic, as are the two cars. 8300 is the numbe of the locomotive. The flat car is a C&O #9024. The gondola is Nickel Plate Rd #9031. Thanks for the info.
That Lionel loco isn't in the post war period . The engine number is the giveaway. It is post 1970 Lionel. Judging by the wheel arrangement and detail , it's a low priced loco. Stay cool and run steam.....
Boxcab: I was in the TCA New England Division for many years 1960's-1988. Stay cool and run steam......
Bob- About a week or so back, I ran across my old TCA badge. Wonder where I saw it? Anyhow, I left it all just after the mid-1980's. Sold everything. Now, if I ever get rich, I'll be after the Lionel I knew and loved so much, back in the 1950's, 1960's. Playing and smiling! Boxcab E50
BoxCab: One day I'll tell you about the collection I auctioned off before I moved to Florida in 1994. The auction was my collection for five days....in 1992. I kept two locomotives, a Scale Hudson(first addition)and a never run Virginian (Blue and Yellow). I don't remember my TCA number. I guess I could look it up in the archives of the New England TCA. Bob- Was rummaging around in boxes, and guess what I found? TCA Quarterly Spring 1987. (Membership list issue.) Were you a member of the National Group then? Or just New England? I received this, after dropping out. Boxcab E50
I still could have have been a member in 1987 in the New England Division.. I used to rebuild any Lionel loco with an old friend of mine, Hollis Baird, who was professor of Electronics at NorthEastern University. It's been so long. I wish I could remember my TCA number. Oh well.... you can't look back.. I enjoyed my stay with the TCA. I made alot of good friends at the time. Many have long since passed away. Stay cool and run steam...... Bob- I was noting the same thing. Was persusing the names for those I'd know from Washington State. Quite a few long gone now. Don Wheat, Bob Stromberg, John Johnson. Great men to know. Their wives were gracious hosts. It was indeed a lot of fun. Boxcab E50
Boxcab: I remember Charlie Ro who used to be a hairdresser and was active in the NETCA. Now he has his own division of O scale trains. He was doing alot of buying and selling for his own collection in those days. Stay cool and run steam......
Bob- The name is very familiar. Is this the same person, who had large ads in Model Railroader, and RMC? Selling new Lionel? Boxcab E50
Boxcab: That's correct. He sells new Lionel and his own line of O scale. I've been out of O scale so long I can't remember the line he started. In the old days he was always wheeling and dealing at every TCA meet. Stay cool and run steam.....
