Hi rails, I now own my first computer, an HP lap top. I am very unfamiliar with a large number of devises or actions of/within all of it. I just now figured out how to pin up certain sites so that their icons are added to the shelf (is it ?). So, can I have an icon on the shelf for Tboard ? Or, am I confusing the use of icons, that I can have, say google or yahoo, as they are (is it ?) search engines, but not have an automatic icon for a forum within, say, yahoo or google ? Thanks, Mark

You are talking about 'shelf' = Favorites Bar I believe :)

If you create a shortcut on that toolbar, by dragging from the address bar (http://www.trainboard.com)to the Favorites bar, this will create the shortcut and if it comes with an icon(known as "favicon") it will create one there.

Favorites, sometimes also known as bookmarks. You can also create one on your desktop, if desired.

Ah, so I in fact can have a Tboard icon or favicon !... Thanks. As you guys sound very astute about computers, may I ask another pesky problem ? I finally figured out how to 'pin' icons to the shelf. I had 5 or 6 all the way to this morning. Opened up lap top 7 or 8 hrs later and (other than the 'chrome' icon or logo always present, an HP chromebook connected to google) the rest disappeared..With out too many technical terms, can you tell what caused this and how I can correct it ? It may help to know I am only a guest browser. No WIFI at home yet. If not able to decipher my problem, I of course will understand. Thanks again, Mark

I'm not familiar per se with the term "guest browser," but I have seen some times when logged in as "guest" to systems where changes made (such as bookmarks/favorites that are established) do not save, so that the next session starts with essentially the default baseline (out-of-the-box). Sounds like what you're describing, kind of, although I would have thought that if it's your computer you'd be the only registered user, so therefore what you do would save. But I also admit to being unfamiliar with Chromebooks. In the internet browser is there a pre-set link/favorite to a help function? That might provide some better advice.

Yeah, it is odd that I shut down completely (not standby) and rebooted several days in a row and those 5 or 6 icons remained. 6th or 7th day (yesterday) they were gone ! Thanks, if I can locate/isolate 'internet browser' I give that a spin.

HTH, I drag address down to favorites bar but when I let go of left mouse click it flies right back to address bar at top .I think maybe it's due to my being on yahoo instead of google which my chromebook is affiliated. I'm going to go google now, log in to TBoard , something I've never tried. I do have a google account . Nope. Same thing when in google. Won't stay in favorites bar.. I know it's something that I need more computer instruction with. No need reply unless you now know what IS going on.
    Thanks , Mark

I don't know what's going on, exactly, but I'm jumping in. I think we've got a terminology gap - not so much talking apples and oranges, but maybe more like Mandarin and Valencia.

First, I think you've got your own computer, and "guest" is where you're connecting to WiFi, say at McDonald's and it looks something like (not exactly): McD #345 Guest. If that's what you mean by guest, it's not relevant to the problem of pinning stuff!

You mentioned pinning stuff that didn't stay there through shutting down the computer and starting it again. I'm wondering if maybe you're not an admin on your own computer, but that's a guess we'll refine eventually.

Just to make sure we all know where you're trying to pin something, here's a shot of my screen as I'm typing this:

    TB Post.jpg

I'd like you to mention what you see in the vicinity of where you're trying to pin something, bearing in mind that our screens won't match exactly, but they should have most or all of the same areas.

If you can't find it on my screen ... I'd like you to find a free program called IrFanView on the web, download and install it. Poke around with it a bit and learn to capture your entire desktop (current monitor) - you should have only one monitor, but the program is going to say that.

This is what the screen will look like when setting up that capture:

    TB IFV.jpg

Either way, I'd like to see your reply of where on my screen, or your screen if that's necessary, you're trying to pin stuff.

If you can do the capture with the stuff you pinned that won't stay through a power-down and power-up, that would be phenomenal!

Note: if you can't see these pictures in the post, right-click and open in a new tab, or click and then use your back button to return to this post.

Oh, yeah - I don't have a TrainBoard icon on my screen, so don't look for it! :)
