" A complaint is only an allegation." Huh? That seems like some interesting tap dancing. He has been charged. So they would seem to have something evidential which moves this to a condition more like an accusation.
If found accountable, he's gonna' have to pay some serious money! That's gonna' be an expensive bill.
Here are the words that jumped out at me: Charged. He is in jail until trial He has been charged with committing a crime. But also that, being a criminal complaint, and not a civil complaint, this is not a suit for damages, though damages could be awarded either as a part of the criminal judgement or, assuming he is found guilty, at a later civil trial. This makes me think that he is being charged not only with things like vandalism, reckless endangerment, and criminal damaging, but also some kind of assault and possibly attempted murder. Vandalism, even a lot of it, won't add up to life in prison. At this point, the monetary damages, however enormous, are the least of his problems. With several other derailments, or attempted derailments under investigation, I'm sure the feds intend to make an example of him. Obviously, I am NOT a lawyer.
