    Folks,
What's the correct paint color names to the red on a CN Dash-9 ?? I am custom painting a pair of Dash 9's in N for a customer, and need to order paint. Also, what decal set, without the map?

I use floquil CN orange #11 on my kato sd40-2's and it is dead on, this has to be the color kato used, it is too close not to be. Closest color for the protoype I have come across as well...

by the way, did you whack off the boxes on the left side of the units? I believe all of CN's -9's have normal handrails that attach level to the cab, no large boxes and high handrails as the kato models have, if you did , I would love to see some pics as to how you did it, and how it came out!

I don't have the shells yet...
I appreciate the help, however! I like Polly Scale paint, what color do I use?

So Hemi, are you going to remove the AC box behind the cab as tarponfly suggested??

I thinking about doing the same to my pair and would like to see how you plan to do this.

I dunno, but without doing a Kaslo cab (I think that's who makes the Canadian cabs), I dunno if it's worth the work. I'll let the customer decide. Can I get a Microscale decals part number for the Dash 9 (North American map)decals? Is that 'red' color officially called 'CN Orange'? Is Floquil the closest thing to that color?
(edit: the map is the decal set I need)

yeah, Hemi, the color is actually called CN orange, but in reality it's more red than orange. I was hesitant at first too, but it really matches the kato CN red color perfect. I have compared it to the used CN units, and seems to match really well (don;t know about their fresh paint as most of their units are well weathered!)
    PS Hemi, check your mail!

Badger Modelflex has the correct CN colors if you like acrylic paint. CN orange 10 and CN Grey 11. These are protoypically correct colors as well. l like the acrylic paints myself, and would personally never go back to paint with harmful VOC. My liver could never handle it.

Microscale also has the CN North American Map decal set you require. This set also includes a grey decal for the stripe behind the cab, so you don't have to paint that in

...Badger CN grey #11 I agree but the badger CN orange #10 is too orangish in my opinion
and doesn't look like the red on the CN C44-9W, I normaly use Badger Amtrak red (#16-58)
    for my CN engines...

    Microscale decals

#60-746 Canadian National Diesels (1992-1995) that's the one w/ the map
#60-939 Canadian National Locomotives (1995+) w/o the map

The older the paint the more orange it becomes. IF you look at a freshly painted CN unit beside one with a 10 year old paint job you will see how the red has faded to orange.

So it depends what you are trying to capture.

If you want fresh out of the paint shop I would agree, but if you are going for something that has seen a few hours of UV, I wouldn't<grin>

...do you have a picture of an engine painted with CN orange #10 from Badger model flex ?
(in my opinion, this Badger CN orange #10 is a good color for the Cartier ALCo C-630... [IMG] )

I prefer acylic paints... If I add some caboose red, could the Modelflex CN orange be closer to a fresh unit?
Thanks for the all the data, guys! Also thanks for the decal info.

    ok Dan...
...I'm silent now. this is the PERFECT match for this old engines, you are right - but I would
never paint a C44-9W or a SD75I with this color, for the modern stuff I need a stronger
    red than this faded color.

    FYI ,
On CN C44-9w the logo with the map ( like Kato's paint ) where used only on the special CN cab . The cab that Kaslo have .
These units where numbered from # 2500 to 2522 . It looks like these units had white handrails all the way , I just saw that for the first time while looking at pictures from the site below .
That mean the logo with map used by Kato is wrong .
Wrong the number that Kato used also !!!

On the regular GE cab ( like the Kato ones , well almost see below ) that CN bought later they used # 2523 and up to 2673 .
I say a GE cab but not quite ! The 2 pieces of windshield are not square in the exterior low corners but more like an SD-70 , 80 , 90 type .

This is the best site I found for pictures of CN Dash 9 locos :

(thats maybe why they are a rare collectors item...) [IMG]
