While waiting for Mike to post I figured that I would show you a photo of him waiting to capture just the right image. Ben
Oh wow! Ben, you are always snapping pics and I never know about it till you let the world see on here!! haha! It sure was a fast chase to Yarmony! Here are my shots from across the tracks... And just so Ben doesn't feel left out, here is a pic of him!!! -Mike
Since it was getting late, we decided to follow the helper set all the way to Glenwood Springs, snapping pics when we could get far enough ahead. And here is another one of Ben snapping pics as his son hangs out the window swinging his arm at the engineer for a toot of the horn. -Mike
I only got one decent shot at Burns, hopefully Ben got some good ones. From the Ped bridge at Glenwood Springs
Wow! Very nice Mike!! I wish that I would have hiked up the hill at Yarmony to get better quality shots such as yours. Ben
Let's see if I can get the rest of my photos from this trip uploaded tonight. A couple of shots near State Bridge. Bond Then we managed to get ahead of the units where we set up along Colorado River Road. Ben
I was really wanting a bridge shot and managed to bag this one a little further down the road. From the same pedestrian bridge that Mike was shooting from in Glenwood Springs. Ben
My last photos from this trip were similar to Mike's of the engines entering the yard to be tied down. I really had a good time chasing some trains with Mike. I hope to do this again in the future. Ben
Nice work Ben! I really like the bridge shot I had a ton of fun that day as well. I might try to get back up there sometime in the spring, and if so, we are for sure gonna go poke our camera's around Steamboat Springs and Craig! -Mike
Sounds great to me! Hop on back to Colorado and join us this spring. We could use some pointers from you. Ben
Toot, If you look at Ben's photo of the consist when backlit, you see the exhaust from what looks like 4 units. Not sure what UP's rules are currently, but modern units are rated as a number of powered axles. AC4400's are rated at like 11 powered axles IIRC. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong--maybe CP does this) Trains are limited to a set number of powered axles leading (36 comes to mind??) There may be an exception for light power moves, but tonnage is tonnage and it doesn't go up the hill for free.
Yes, it looks like 2 pulling, 2 pushing. Thought they'd have at least 1 as a helper. Fair bit of weight there. You'd need a big power pack to model that in DCC.hboy:
All C44AC's (including 60ACs, 60/44s, GEVO's, & ES44ACs) Are rated at 12.7 EPA (Equivalent Powered Axles). The EDBA (Equivalent Dynamic Brake Axles) varies from unit to unit. For comparison, SD70MAC is 10.4, SD70ACe is 12, SD9043 is 12, and the champ is actually the SD80MAC (which is no longer in service) at 13 EPA. On Light-Power moves, EPA isn't a maximum, it's a minimum of 8 EPA for 3 or more units. What you're seeing there is the minimum units on line for power and dynamic brakes, 4 for 9-12 units. Here's a chart from the System Special Instructions.

# of Units Minimum MU'd Minimum online Armed EoT MU Cable between units

1-8 All 1 No All

9-12 8 4 Yes Not between 8th & 9th

13-15 8 5 Yes Not between 8th & remaining units

16-18 8 6 Yes Not between 8th & remaining units

19-21 8 7 Yes Not between 8th & remaining units

22-25 8 8 Yes Not between 8th & remaining units

If y'all have any further questions, fire away. It's kind fun looking stuff up in my books.
Thanks, K3ndawg, that was what I was leading up to, without the actual figures. Does UP actually lash up 25 units for a light move? That would clear out Denver!
Wow! Do you realise just how much more complicated that's just made it for my love of running multi lash-ups? On the subject of the SD80MAC's, my understanding is that they were a CSX only speciality. When did they withdraw them (seeing Kato are doing them)
