Most of you know that I am a steam buff but as time goes by I figured I should know someting about deisels too. Where do I begin? There is so much going on about this number or that model and details such as fans and fuel tanks etc. I suppose I need to get a book or two or does anyone know a web site that gives history of diesel growth and change over the years. I really feel out of it as naturally, most of the conversations are about current equipment. Where do I begin.

    Robin,
For most of the contemporary diesels (since 1972)GPs, SDs, Dash this and that, and SWs, and others try: The Contemporary Diesel Spotter's Guide "Year 2000 Edition" , published by Diesel Era and authored by Marre and Withers. It can be had for $25.00(US) and includes well over 700 photos of most roads, and many fallen flags. Excellent reading and very useful for detail information. It gets my vote for Book of the Year. Have a good one, Justin May

Did you ever stop to think about the different anticlimbers as well?

    Just teasing...

This may sound stupid, but for what it is worth, as you are in Canada there is somehting that may also give you some help.

Bytown Railway Society made train "Collector" Cards of Canadian engines and Steamers (there are actually 6 more caboose cards). They were produced in 1992, 1993, and 1994 I believe. It is a good way to see evelution of diesle power, and the suddle differences between units.

They sell for around 10-18 dollars. They should be at any train store or Train show as they were not a super-seller.

    Happy Railroading!!
