The International Port of Coos Bay will receive $8 million dollars that can go towards the purchase of the Coos Bay Rail Line.
Congressman Peter DeFazio’s effort to redirect bridge repair became final when the Senate passed the FY2009 Omnibus Appropriations Bill.
DeFazio say the Coos Bay Branch line is vital to the economy of the south coast. The transfer of funds will now assist the Port with the purchase transaction.
Combined with $4 million dollars the Port received from the Oregon Transportation Commission and the recent $12.6 million dollars in loans from the Oregon Economic and Community Development Department the Port will have the necessary funds for the purchase.
The Port expects to close the deal with Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad before the end of this month

    More Coos Bay Rail News:

International Port of Coos Bay Officials were in Salem yesterday to testify in front of the Oregon Transportation Commission on their application to use some of the Federal Stimulus Money for the Coos Bay Rail Line repairs.
Oregon’s share of Federal Stimulus Money, about $100 million dollars has been trickling in to State agencies.
Yesterday the Oregon Transportation Commission heard testimony from applicants from all over Oregon requesting a portion of the Federal Stimulus money for various transportation projects.
Martin Callery, Director of Communications and Mobility for the Port is hopeful that most of their requests would be granted.
The Port requested $33.4 million dollars for repairs to the 111 mile railroad that runs from Eugene to North Bend.
$10.6 million dollars would be used for track repairs. $19.5 million dollars would be spent on bridge repairs and $6.3 million dollars would be spent on the repair of nine tunnels.
Most of the repair work if funded would start in June and the rest of the projects are slated to begin by January of 2010.

I wonder if there's any left over for POTB?

    Tillamook line

I'm wondering why we're hearing nothing about allocations to POTB. Is it because DeFazio and IPCB are 'squeaky wheels' that no one wants to try competing with? Was there much less traffic over the Tillamook line so that the players feel there'd be much more benefit per dollar rebuilding the Coos Bay line? What a shame that both can't happen.

Has anyone heard any positive discussion about rebuilding the Tillamook line?

DeFazio is certainly squeakier than most of the other politicians. Gotta love him for that.

I suspect that state leaders see more future potential on the Coos Bay line than the POTB. We'll see what happens.

They are supposedly trying for some "Stimulus" funding. Otherwise, I'd say we can't really use the word "positive".
