The S/B Coast Starlight clipped a tanker early this morning near Mount Shasta and derailed 2 loco's and 3 cars. The worse injury was the engineer who MIGHT have some cracked ribs.
It was not a tanker it was a derailed tank car. Seems Corp the scab railroad that took over the former SP Siskyu line derailed some cars switching on a track parallel to the main. Having never had to dog catch to this area(Black Butte Calif.) Not sure of terrain. But fellow engineer says this is near the foot of Mt Shasta and for the most part is slower track. Having happened at around 2am and the time of year I imagine it was pretty cold on the train with no hep for heating and lights waiting for the buses. The big question I have is when did Corp derail this car and why didn't they provide protection to the mainline. Heads should roll if they had more than 2 minutes notice time and didn't warn the UP and Amtrak trains.
Probably the same old story, "I didn't know anything about it. It must have been his fault over there."
Found out where this happened is 50mph track. Just before they go into the slower Mt grade curvey area. Having seen the photo's it looked like it happened near a set of crossovers and some yard tracks. We'll just have to wait to see what or who is to blame. But I hear the engineer is okay except for a few ribs.
