I just got done checking my Atlas engines for cracking, luckly I have only one with this problem. I am four out of four for excessive lubercation. Does anyone have any tips on how to keep the paint from cracking more then it already has? So far you can just see hairline ripples in the paint, nothing has chipped or chunked off yet. At this point, I am never going to buy an Atlas engine again!!!!!
Hello sk, Welcome to Trainboard Don't give up on Atlas, their stuff is getting better and better, especially in the detailing. With all the talk about cracking paint, I would guess they would want to correct that for future models Which of your locomotives has the problem? For stopping further cracking of the paint, I would guess that a coat of clear finish (dullcote or similar) would help seal it. Have you noticed any excess lubricant seeping onto the shell? This has been a problem with our SD60M's which seems to be attacking the paint. Dissassembly and clean up were required. These models need VERY little lubricant, and it is strange that Atlas applied so much that it leaks out. ------------------ Alan Curtis. Moderator. If the B23-7s are like this then Atlas will be losing me as a customer. When you find cracks in the paint spray the it will Dullcote. Make sure all the excess oil is off before you spray it. DO NOT bend any parts with cracks. It will make it worse. The paint shatters like glass if you bend it. I sent my shells with the cracked paint back to Atlas for them to fix it after talking to Paul Graf(head of product development at Atlas). To get rid of excess lube, remove all excess lube with a cotton swab and then let all the parts sit for a couple of days in the air to dry any film remaining from the lube.
Geez guys,I have over 40 ATLAS locos 12 of which are SD-60s.Not a sign of cracking paint on any of them. Are you sure your just not in a mood to trash somebody? ------------------ Catt!#118 - Moderator and A freelancer to the end

Take the shell off them and put them in the light and see if you can see a shine from excess lube. I have 20+ Atlas(china) locos and most all of them have overlubrication to a certain degree. Ever since Kato quit making locos for Atlas, Atlas locos turned to sh!t. My GP7/9s had bent endrails and ran loudly. My CNW gp7 didn't even run when i bought it new. I had to shim the frame haves before it picked up electrical contact with the motor.
Can anyone post a picture of a "cracked" Atlas engine. I'm just curious to see what it looke like. Jean-Louis Simonet (simonet@club-internet.fr) visit traiN'ternet : http://www.trainternet.org/
I checked my Atlas SD-60's and all other of my Atlas Locos and found no paint problems. I wish I had more SD-60's for the RR. Art
Scott, why didn't you return it them to ATLAS? That's what warranties are for you know.ATLAS is very good at honoring the warranty on their product. By the way I'm sure you've noticed how well the KATO units run since the ATLAS?KATO collabaration? ------------------ Catt!#118 - Moderator and A freelancer to the end

they sent them free of charge, and they even paid shipping.like i said a huge thenks to them.i had told the guy at atlas that i fond the hipping when i was going to renumber two of my oakway engines.i told him i had to strip the factory number off first and when i tried to seperate the cab from the shell the paint cracked off of the entire nose.he said that they have had reports of this and he would send me new shells.he then added that he would send two numbered and two unnumbered so i didn't have to strip them.they also sent a bnsf sd60m shell also. they were nothing but nice the entire time and that makes me buy more atlas stuff.great customer service. ------------------ anyone need a car call ed pinkley, home of the pinkley taurus.
Just recieved my new shells today. Atlas came through great. Not only did they send a replacement UP walkway/sidesill and an Oakway shell they sent the complete shell, walkway, and handrail for both of the 2 SD60s.
