    A&A,
Believe it or not I don't its mostly spine cars or auto racks and regular coal cars that were Conrails... I haven't got to see a Johnstown coalporter in a while. Hard to believe to me as well as to you! I been trying to get some pictures of the silver ones with the yellow ends to model a few that i built.... And now I have to paint them! So. I have to find some pictures to finish them up.. :D

Hi - I've hoping to start a project like this in HO for some time. I collected a bunch of photos of these cars this past summer in Cumberland, MD but unfortunately I'm deployed with the Army right now and can't get to them. I'll try to remember to post some of the photos when I get home (not sure when that will be, but hopefully within a month).

I've found that these cars are pretty unique - in fact there's no model that accurately represents them. The E&C shops 13-rib car is similar in appearance, but it's longer and taller. I think it's still the best starting point, and will get you a good representation of the car, but to give you an understanding of these cars, compare an E&C model to a Bowser 100-ton triple hopper model. The CSX cars were rebuilt from these triple hoppers, using basically just the frame, but that makes them roughly 47' cars instead of 50' ones like the E&C model. They should also be about the same height as the Bowser car.

This maybe more detail than you care about, but I'm very interested in modeling these cars accurately, just because I like that fact that they're unique compared to the more modern aluminum cars used by BNSF, UP, and other roads. The pictures I took show that there are even height differences between some of the gray (or silver) cars and the black ones - plus the ex-Conrail cars throw in another variation. If all this doesn't concern you, just use the E&C (now LBF) cars - the Walthers cars have nicer detail, but unfortunately have one too many side ribs, so the CSX paint scheme doesn't look right on them.

Hope you find this all useful - I might not be able to check this list very often, but I'll try to get back and answer other questions you might have, plus I'll try to post those pictures soon.

John. You need to take a weekend trip to the Cleveland, Ohio area. The Coal Porters are almost always lined up on the siding from Willowick west to Collinwood yard. They sit there, waiting to be run down the CEI Power plant spur in Eastlake. A little closer would be the Ashtabula Docks yards. Both the NS and CSX have yards at the docks and once again, the cars get run to the Ashtabula CEI power plant. Problem with Ashtabula is to get decent pics you would have to be on R.R. property. NS has already run me off just sitting in my truck in their yard office parking lot earlier this summer. In the Cleveland area you can see them lined up from I90 and Rt.2 behind business' which butt up to R.R. property. [IMG]

I took my photos at Mexico Tower in Cumberland, MD. The Mexico Farms Rd. bridge just east of the tower provides for nice overhead shots, and then you can walk down the service road a little ways and take side view photos. I collected about 20 pictures. Unfortunately, as I mentioned in my last post, I'm away from home and probably can't scan those pictures until the end of the month or so. I'll try to help you out as soon as I can.

I'm back home finally, and I scanned a few of my photos. I have some more I can scan, but this covers a number of angles for the black cars, plus a couple of the "Confederates" plus a former Conrail car for comparison.

I'm going to try something new - I want to see if I can just post thumbnails of the photos that you can click on to bring up the full size photo. Might take a couple tries editing...

Here's a few side-view photos of the black cars taken at Mexico Tower in Cumberland, MD:

Here are a couple of overhead views of the cars:

Here's one of the "Confederate" gray cars - you can see that these are slightly taller than the black cars:

There are some newer aluminum cars that CSX bought that are painted silver, but I believe all of the faded gray (almost white) cars I photographed are steel cars.

One other thing to note is that the black cars rebuilt by Raceland Shops and Bethlehem have slightly different details - unfortunately, right now I don't have my references handy to say which is which. If you notice, CSXT 381052 has a ladder on the right end in the photo, as does the gray CSXT 391531, while most of the other cars have individual grab irons running up the side. There are a few other minor detail differences. I'll try to post that information later when I find my book on that subject.

I'll add another photo in a follow-up post - apparently I've exceed the number of images allowed in one post...

    Hope this helps!

Finally, here's one of the NYC (ex-Conrail) cars, which also appear to be the same height as the Confederates:

Hope you guys enjoy the photos - I love the little variations in these cars, and was pretty excited to get some photos of them this past summer.

    Have a great weekend!
