    Hey guys,

Does anyone has overhead or high angle photos of CSX MOW GP40s or GP38s that they could post? I'm interested in modeling a couple using the new Atlas models, but I want to get the fans correct - i.e. I want to model the button-top or regular fan grills for a specific unit. These units got lots of mis-matched fans over the years as they were shopped.

Here's an example of one in a photo I picked up at a show (unfortunately I don't know who the photographer was, or I'd give him credit):

Notice the two different types of radiator fans, but more importantly, look at the dynamic brake fan - from discussing this with several different fellow diesel nuts, it appears to by a 48" dynamic brake fan from a old F-unit! It's not the right style for a GP9, which tended to be taller and more dome-shaped, but looks to be a perfect match for the fan in the Highliners HO F-unit kit.

I'm probably going to model this one, but I'd like to see more photos of the tops of these MOW units, to look at other variations. I've search through Dean H's CSX Archives, and haven't been able to find any more overhead shots.

    Thanks!

Here's the only photo I currently have posted on my website:

As you can see, this unit has its own fan quirk: note the missing fan over the dynamic brake area!

I'll check my archives and see if I have any photos; I know I have 100's of GP40 photos.

I've noticed the missing dynamic brake fan on a couple units pictured in the CSX Archives. I'm curious to see how the hole is plated over (e.g. square bolted plate, round plate, or "filled and sanded").

Thanks for checking on the pictures for me!

    Dave,
Nice Pumpkin CSX picture! I believe thats the best i've seen yet! I too been digging for information on the GP-38's in the orange MOW scheme! However I didn't look close enough to notice the different fans! And it sure is appreant! I'm glad I stoped in this thread to read the posts. Very interesting! It sure is going to be fun modeling an HO scale CSX Pumpkin loco! I got a few old junker Life-Like's that are the plain janes... Nothing special but as you all should know i'm big on anything of the CSX family! So... The UP and SF loco's I have are being painted to CSX or some other road that is a predicessor to the whole CSX family :D Good eye Dave! I hadn't notived the difference in the fans or even missing ones! :D Then again.. My eyes are for the ole black dirty SMOKEY steamers... HEHEHE :D

I did find a picture of CSXT 9651, a GP38, but it is not a roof shot and appears "normal": both matching rear fans, as well as the DB fan. I'll keep looking (and try to post the photo tomorrow).

About three months ago there were about ten pumkins Line up to enter the cumberland Md. shops. Sorry but I didn't have my camera with me. What was the reason for the pumkin colors?

Arthur - CSX and other railroads paint their Maintenance-of-Way equipment safety orange or other high-visibility colors just to make them more noticeable if they are moving at slow speeds or stationary along the right-of-way while crews are doing track maintenance.

    Have a great weekend folks,

    Hey Arthur!
Welcome aboard! Maybe you can add more to the CSX forum. I think Dave hit the main reason on the head: locos were painted orange for their visibility.

is the Pumpkin fleet still majority GP40 or does CSX got any GP38-2's or other units in it yet. Last I checked it was all GP40 but my info is a little outdated

I am not certain of the current "Pumpkin" fleet. At one time, CSX had a wide variety of units including GP38's, GP40's, U18B's, U23B's, and at least 1 B23-7. As far as GP38-2's or GP40-2's, I don't think any of those models were used as Pumkins, as the original idea was to utilize the older units before their retirement.

I have a friend that worked for the Eire Lackawanna in there Akron Ohio Locomotive shops till just before the End of the Erie, He is simply amazed at all the new technology in the locomotives today, Such as the fact that both EMD and GE would be producing 6000HP units, That AC traction would be overwhelming the industry. That EMD would come to develop a 4 stroke engine. Its simply amazing and overwhelming how far we have gone in just 50 years
