Hi all, just curious why so many are "parked" here. Must be 40 or so along Santa Fe Ave. just north of 23rd. Road #'s between 700 and 1115 or so.
Slow down in coal and oil shipments? Are they old enough to be coming off a lease or sold? Newer power on line replacing them?
I don't know, an article I read last week indicated a slowdown on coal (primarily Appalachian), and I guess they gotta' put them somewhere, but there's really no major facilities here.
They probably don't need them right now, so they're parked until until needed again or sold. UP just recently sold 100 engines, a lot of them Gensets, which are absolute junk.
BNSF doesn't haul Appalachian coal. The units are coming up on 20 years old, so could be end of their leases.
^ I'm sorry, I could have said that better, reaching the end of their time makes sense, could be this is a good, out of the way place to hold them.
A bunch of the original Santa Fe units are coming up on end of lease. Some are being converted to AC. Coal shipments are Dow over all, but Dash9s aren't used in coal service.
Yeah, a bunch are in Santa Fe colors, this is all just curiosity on my part, I haven't seen so many here before.
