Does anyone know the CV's & settings for the Soundtrax Diesel DSD? (HO Scale). I have a soundtrax equiped diesel, but can't figure out the CV's or settings for the sound effects, or volumes. Thanks.

I just wanted to let you know that your post was read. I will be taking delivery of a soundtrax steam loco with sound some time this month. If you haven't heard by then I'll post.

What kind of DCC do you have? have you tried to contact Throtle Up?
    I have Lenz and I just hit button 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Chris: What I have is a Soundtrax HO DSD 1st Gen. EMD Diesel decoder. It works & sounds good. I just need to change some volumes. And unfortunetly, a diesel manual was not sent with the decoder. The steam decoder has different CV's for their volume and functions. I'm using a Digitrax Empire Builder DCC system with I.R. throttles. A really nice set-up. Once I "Translated" the directions, things went pretty well. I thought I might call the Soundtrax office to see if they can help me. You'll really like the sound system once you have it up & running. It seems strange to "not hear" a non sound equiped engine afterward. Thanks for your reply, and keep in touch. Maybe I can help you if you get stuck. Larry

I am a N scaler....I will have to resort to using dummy locos or cars for sound. I'm first building up my locomotive roster and getting the layout itself started first.

MTaylor: You may not want to wait until you have a fleet of engines. Once you hear the sound equiped engines, you'll want all your engines sound equiped. And even the "cheap" DSX units are $100. In N scale, putting the sound unit in a "dummy" or box car would be a lot easier installation than in a powered unit. Good luck, and happy listening!!!!!!

I have heard the sounds and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's like a real rail road.!!!!!

I have been looking real hard at the DSX chips. My quuestion is how do they sound for N scale? I would think the small speaker needed for N scale would rob the effect of the sounds. Is this not true? Also, how does the DSX modules work? Do you assign the DSX chip the same address as the DCC decoder and then use the various CV commands? I could not find this info on Soundtraxx's website.

Since I am not an "n" scaler I can't give you a definite answer regarding the small size of "n" trains. However let me put it to you this way. In the very old days of sound repoduction in movie theaters they made a speaker that had about a 24" diameter cone. It was called "voice of the theater" sounded great. Now look at some of the home theater systems from Boze and the like, they're tiny and just as good a sound. The enclosure that the speaker is in is as, if not more, important than the actual speaker. So I would think of some baffles and such would help a lot.

    LOL

follow up, I read my last post and realized it was vague. When I mean baffles I specifcaly mean a speaker enclosure. For HO I use 35mm film cans or some other container that has the same diameter as the speaker. Drill holes in one end and leave the other end whole. I saw a neat trick a while ago: mount the speaker in an enclosure in the tender, cone facing upwards in the coal box. Cover the top with black painted foam that has been "distressed" and spread some glue on it then sprinkle coal... not too much ... on the top of that. It looks very realistic and sounds great.
