Do you run your G scale outside or inside

    I was just wondering how many of you guys run you G scale inside like me. I have the room outside, but the locals seem to destroy anything left outside. Oh well my wife loves them running inside anyway.

    Hi Art

    I run my equipment outside but I kind'a live in the "sticks" and so the only troublesome neighbours I have to deal with are a few deer during the spring and fall.

    Have a running and sceniced workshop inside though. No ALL days are sunney and warm.

    Well, I'm building with a couple of friends a layout for exhibition purposes.

    This will be a modular thing, single oval track of about 100' by 20'.the width of the modules will be 1'4"

    Later we will add some industries for switching purposes. These will com on a straight section of 60' in lenght and the same width as the standard modules.

    this straight section will come in parallel with one side of the oval so we will have a total width on one side of the oval 2'8" and there, the switching area will connect to the oval mainline.

    The purpose will be to run modern diesels and also live steam locomotives.

    a diesel sound module of Phoenix sounds will be connected to an amplifier and a lot of loudspeakers under the layout.

    I run mine outside. Have about half of the backyard. I am fenced, and have no problems with vandalism at this point. Railroad has been going since 1989. I built a storage building, with a track using a Llagas Creek 3 way switch leading inside. Engines are stored on those tracks, shelves above hold cars. All trackwork is code 250 Llagas Creek and I use #4, #6 and #8 Llagas Creek switches. They recently built me a custom crossing since they don't offer one. I use radio control and on board battery power.
    Enjoy it very much, especially when I want out of the basement with the HO railroad and into the sunlight.

    Bob, how did you lay the track? Does it lay on the ground or on some elevation?

    How did you secure it so it doesn't move and what ballast do you use?

    A small portion is mounted on CCA treated wood because of the need to let rainwater escape under it. The majority is laid on a trench of gravel, filled and tamped with what is called here "buckshot gravel" which is a really small but good granite, and the track is then floated on a bed of buckshot and crusher fines, which is the left overs after the local quarry makes all the different kinds of gravel. They have big piles of it. It has a lot of rock dust, which I mist when laid on the buckshot gravel and which holds the track in place until enough rainstorms finally cause a little to wash. I do a little track maintenance once a month, with a small level and a train pulling a couple of cars of buckshot ad another car pulling crusher fines.
