Is there a good way to distinguish a dash 9 from like a SD 90 from a distance? I know that both are 6 axle locos and both have the overhanging radiator (fan housings). But is there something else? Is there a book or something that has a breakdown on doing model IDs with pictures??????? Thanks!!!! [ 22. August 2002, 14:46: Message edited by: beast5420 ]
From the front the cab & nose shape is different, on the GE's the angled down section is sort of triangular and angled down to the nose corner, and on the EMD standard nose it's almost rectangular and slopes to the side, unless it's one of them phaseII SD90's with the "beaten with an ugly stick" mess of a nose! (Note, the GE's share the cab shape with dash 8's / AC4400's / AC6000's and the EMD's share the cab shape with late SD60M / SD70M / SD75M / SD70I / SD70MACs etc...so identifying the cab shape to EMD or GE won't tie it down to one model, but it will tell you wether it's a GE or EMD product) From the side or rear, the 90MAC's have a large extended section of body behind the angled radiator which has the dynamic brakes in it, the dash 9's end basically at the radiator, so the 90MAC is much longer! Welcome aboard beast5420, but let me gently chide you; never feel that any question you ask is "dumb". We ask questions to obtain knowledge. How can that be dumb? keep askin' questions, somebody is bound to have an answer here. Glad to have you as a member CT
It's easy to distinguish between GE's and EMD's simply by the fuek tank. The GE's are angular, and the EMD's are rounded. Another good book is "A Field Guide to Trains" by Gerald Foster. Houghton Mifflin Company publishers. Welcome to Trainboard!
thanks everyone. i'll do some snooping around and see if ebay or amazon still have any of those books. thanks much!
