Can someone tell me what Dynamic Brakes are on model train? or a real one? ------------------ RR: K, C, & Bird Butt Railroad - SP, NS, and ROCK admirer. being a locomotive engineer the dynamic brakes has been the greatest advancement in diesels. what they do is take the current from the traction motors and reverse the current in an opposite direction thus causing the retarding of speed through the traction motors and not causing wear and tear on the train and also helping keep your air so you don't "p*ss it away" and jeopardize a possible runaway in extreme cases. now with that explained now you get into standard range dynamic , extended range, and extend. range- high capacity dynamic. these are all different by the different amps in which dynamic is effective and also speeds.older gp's and sd's mostly are standard and then in the 80's with the gp50 and the 40-2's the extended range came in, then now with the sd60's,70's and all the new dash units from generic electric these all have ext. range- high capacity, hope this helps out a little. VB, also have a look at the topic below, which also covers dynamic brakes http://www.trainboard.com/Forum56/HTML/000066.html ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery
Also, on ther newer locomotives the DB grill is located behind the cab. (Example-SD60-SD70-SD80 (?)) Happy Railroading!! Dane N. ------------------ TAMR2860-AKA BC Rail King TAMR2860@Canada.com for TAMR info. To send a general TRAIN! E-Mail send to BCRailKing@Canada.com AIM me at TAMR2860!
Dane, on the SD90 the DB gear is at the rear end of the hood, so I expect the SD80's are as well. ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery
lol-Alan, I was just about to post that. I went and looked at the SD80, because as you saw I was unsure of the location in the orignal post, and there it was. Also-a detial note, from what I can tell the SD90MAC-HII has a bigger DB fan than the SD9043MAC. This info is from over head shots on video, and they may be tricking my mind, lol. Happy Railroading!! KATO UNDECORATED with dynamic brakes, SD40-2 ... so on a model train they are nothing? ------------------ RR: K, C, & Bird Butt Railroad - SP, NS, and ROCK admirer. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by virtual-bird: KATO UNDECORATED with dynamic brakes, SD40-2 ... so on a model train they are nothing? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Basically, you are correct. On the SD40-2's, they are the "blister" in the top middle of the hood that contains two fans. The non-dynamic version of the SD40-2 has no "blister" or fans in this area. On the "older" EMD locos (GP's thru 60 series, SD's thru the 45 series) the GP series (4 axle units) contained 1 fan, while the SD series contained 2 fans. Chessie
And maybe another comment for you virtual-bird would be to say that dynamic brakes are something that work on a real train and are only a decorative feature in modeling. The term does not refer to something working or a way of braking model trains. Charlie ------------------ Ship It On The FRISCO!
I know you can remove them from units but does anyone make a kit to add them? (HO and N) ------------------ Theres no such thing as having to many coal hoppers or GP40-2 when you model Chessie System LONG LIVE THE KITTEN!!! LONG LIVE BIG BLUE!!!
I am working on a convertion to make a GP40-2 non dynamic brake unit into a GP60 unit. The GP60 DB housing varies from road to road, but the kit I am coming out with is the type on SF GP60M's. The kit will include the top fan and both sides. Thanks ------------------ Craig Martyn BLMA(best looking models around) Custom painting and detailing **Soon to come, N scale detail parts!!!

(HO and N) <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I remember that they were available as detail parts in HO, although you could use the Athearn assembly, or whoever else you choosse. Many builders now offer the dynamic brake parts as separate "snap-in" assemblies so they can tool the shells as one unit that can be easily converted to either version. I am not sure who (if anybody) offers this in N scale. Chessie
