Any thoughts on who had previously owned that second engine?

I would guess it's a former IC unit. Definately has the look of a Paducah rebuild

With that unit number, and appearance, ex-IC family was what came into my mind.

Shaun, I’m not real close, 30 mile SE, but we do some shopping up that way every month. What I know on the engine history is only what I read in another forum and that is.
7665 and 4541 are rebuilt GP-9’s, 4541 was CNW power; I don’t for sure on the other one. It might have been IC at one time, I believe they had some. They had 3 engines at one time, but I haven’t seen the third [700? also a GP-9] for awhile.

Richard, those photos look like they were taken down round Lerna or Trilla area.

Inch53, knew you were at least in the neighborhood(closer than I am at about 100 miles:tb-biggrin:) know where M-Ville is used to go the Fair there every year, along with the Cumberland Co.Fair
BTW, do you have any info on the ex-BN SD9 or 7 that sits just off of I-57 just N. of the US 45 exit at the elevator at Mattoon?

Shaun,, we’ve been up to Hoopeston a few times, but it’s been a spell. There’s a couple folks we know from there, that live out on Mill Creek lake now.

If this is the engine you’re asking about,

I don’t know much, other than it was built by Alco. We use to see it at an elevator on IL-121 N of Mattoon in Cole, when we went up to Springfield or Chatom. They either own or lease it to load hoppers at different elevators on the IC/CN Mattoon-Decatur tracks.

    Inch53,
You may be right about that. I don't know the area all that well. It was maybe between 5 and 10 miles south of the exit where the BN SD9 is that Shaun mentioned.

I did shoot a 3rd unit in another location not far from there when I was up there. Still have to find the CD with that pic and post it.

There is an elevator just S of 1-57 maybe 1 mile N of the US 45 exit just beyond the rail overpass that has a first generation Ex BN SD sitting under the rail loadout. Went thru on I-57 on Christmas day it was sitting at said elevator and on the opposite side of the over pass was a cut of grain hoppers with a grey IC caboose on the end of it

    Shaun,,
That one, I have no idea, I’ve never seen it. We haven’t been on I-57 in years, but now I’m curious as to where your referring.
This might have been the caboose you saw, we see it in Effingham sometimes

    Inch,
I saw the BN SD9 that Shaun is talking about but was not able to get over and get some pics of it. Maybe next time.

You can see it very good if you are northbound on I-57. Not sure how you would get to it from the surface streets.

    Inch,
Yup, that is the caboose I saw. Not sure how you go to Mattoon, but if you were to get on I-57 at Rt.45 and go N. toward Rt.16 would be on your right hand side about 1 mile N. of 45. As Rich said it is plainly seen sitting under the rail loadout.

Rich, am pretty sure you are right that it is an SD9, but I am not very good at knowing the first generation EMD's and have only gotten very brief glances at it. Only time I am down that way anymore is passing thru on the way to see our daughter in the St. Louis area. Unfortunately all the family I had left in that area have passed on now

    Shaun – Richard,,
I think I figured it out; it’d be a little north of Neoga [the EIRR meets the IC/CN in town] from the way you two’s talking.
We’re going to deliver a couple grandkids back to #3 daughter in Girard next weekend. Time an weather permitting, we might go through there, then go on up n catch 16 in Mattoon.

Shaun,, we go two ways to Mattoon, through the country to Charleston and 16 over or pickup 121 at Greenup north through Toledo, either way is about 40 mile or so

Inch , if you take 121 on up to 45 (instead of taking the Lerna Rd in Toledo?) and then 57 there at LakeLand College, it is about 1 mile north of LakeLand on 57 and off to your right. Is definately South of 16 as that is how we went to take our daughter back to EIU

    Inch,
You got it now. I couldn't remember the name of the little town near where I actually shot the two EIRR units. Over in Neoga at the EIRR / CN interchange is where I saw the 3rd unit.
Still looking at CD's trying to find that shot. I'm a little behind on my photo logs. :tb-ooh:

That doesn't rule out Conrail, though... they had ICG rebuild some Geeps for them. Have to check if the details match.
