berNd, I believe what you do on the first post is the only true drawback to this policy change. I have done many [Quick Nav] edits to the first post of several of my own threads. This is just one of the things we must now live with. Nonetheless, this still falls within what a moderator will be more than happy to assist with. Instead of editing your post, just compose a PM. The moderator will paste your requested change into the post as soon as possible. No one is loosing any amount of freedom with this new policy. You can still say whatever you want to say, in keeping with what is allowed.
Really? I'm going to "supportively" observe that I think this si a really stupid idea. If the concern is about having your content missed because you buried it into an old section, then that's on the poster. On the othe rhand, if I'm adjusting my photobucket and would like to change the phot source refrences on a still useful thread, then I'm SOL. And no, i do't see the point in dragging a mod out to adjust my old posts, they have more and better thigns to be doing, like modding or model railroading than to be helping me Spring Clean. Or adjusting thread titles to show updates in content (NEw Update ##/##/####). I can;t comment on people abusinmg the system, I've never seen it. I was brought up in forum etiquette to not go double or triple posting, and if I hd something new, it would be marked with EDIT: Instead of two back to back posts, and I have had thigs to add, like maybe I found something, prior to a new poster, and after an hour, or two, or six. EDIT: but yes, I suspect w're all just griping too much. I still fail to see how this is progress, but we'll work around it. We always do. (See how well that works?)
Or are you? By simply quoting your old post (with the out-dated photo reference), and posting the updated photo, not only do you effectively update the content, but you also bump the post to the top of the "New Posts" list, which brings that content to users who may have missed it the first time around. No moderator assistance necessary in this case.
valid point, but then they miss out the discussions between posts, taking the painting threads for example, I post something, someone asks why I did that that way. And while a bump is always good for how to threads, most of the time, if they are dredging it up, it's because of a search, or someone said, "hey, I think there was a tutorial about that somewhere..."
Do people still have edit ability in their blogs? If they do, then I'd say a post like that be converted to blog and then linked to. Also, I was burned in this very thread, I noticed in my last post that I wrote the exact opposite of what I meant and I can't edit. lol on me. Rick, the reason we're all being "punished" is that there is no way to do this selectively. Unless you know who the bad actors are and often, that doesn't come out till well after they are established as good posters.
Mark Watson, Can you go back to my first post in this thread and make this change for me? After the last line, I want you to write "Everyone posting below is a total goober. Nyaaah!" :tb-wink: :tb-wink: [kidding, of course] Adam
Editing older posts Is there a way to edit an older post? I noticed that the "edit" option at the bottom of posts more than a couple hours old dissapears. Thanks, Brian
Reason discussed here: http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?134181-Edit-Feature-Not-Available If there is something you'd need to change, please drop me PM.
I think there's a time limit for editing posts, I came across that myself one day. I can't imagine the rationale behind that though.
There is a time out feature. We had too many cases in the past where disgruntled users went back and totally wiped out all their posts removing good information and leaving disjointed threads. PM me what you need editing and I can do it for you.
I believe people should have that option, regardless of whether they're being petty or not. That side of things isn't an issue for me, anyway. But just the other day I wished to add a bit more info to a post I had made, but because of the time limit I would have had to cut/paste or retype half of the original post, thereby producing a near duplicate post. Instead I didn't bother, and I left it as it was.
