EMD Trainmans Ebay G scale Auction

Hi, I will be selling off a few items in the next few days. I already have a USA Trains SD-70MAC on auction now at Ebay. I will be down sizing my railroad a bit more. I have 4 seperate tracks and the space I need just isn't working for me and want to go back to just 3 main line tracks again. The 4th track was just basiclly a trolley track. I will be selling off Aristocraft track as a huge lot, mainly curves and a couple of switches since I will be using the straights for a new 2nd train shelf handling system I want to build, I ran out of room on the 1st one I built. I will also be selling a Bachman trolley and a Bridgewerks UR-15 transformer. You can search me a s a seller on ebay under the handle dakman98rt. The direct link to ebay is >>> www.ebay.com You must register to purchase items there, but registration is free. I have attached a few pictures of my first train shelf handling system which can only handle half of my collection.

I got around to reading your reviews. Don't get on this board much. The USA engines are real power hogs! I have five GP's, and I put a amp meter on one and it drew 2 amps on a light engine. I can couple two together and get about one hour on a battery. The LGB F units I have I run a A-B-A and get two hours run time on the same battery.

Trains, Hi, yes you are right, the USA locmotives do not make a good battery DCC operation due to they do draw alot of amps. USA fixed this problem on the SD-70MAC locomotives as they have better quality windings in the motors so amperage draw on those is lower even though the SD-70MAC has 4 motors compared to 2 motors on the USA GP locomotives. USA locomotives are better suited with a powerful track transformer power, especially running in a double or triple header operation. I myself own 2 USA GP-9 locomotives and 2 GP-30 locomotives and can run them together on a Bridgewerks transformer with no problem, but could never do that on battery DCC. I also run a USA F3 ABBA locomotives together and thats about all my Bridgewerks can handle even though it has 15 amps and 24 volts suppling the track. For those wanting to run USA multiple locomotives I highly recommend the Bridgewerks Magnum DL-1000 15 amp 24volt transformer or the Bridgewerks Magnum 25 TDR which is a 25 amp 24 volt trasnformer Both transformers are fully radio controlled units. Thanx for your comments and taking the time to write me.

P.S. you can check the specs and other Bridgewerks transformers at >>>>>>>>> www.bridgewerks.com They have the best transformer warranty on the market.

    My USA trains rare find

Route 66 has inspired me to write about my rare USA trains find. Sometimes they are put into a corner and forgotten about, but then it's found and put out with the rest of the current production trains, even though it's new, it still is old and out of production. I'm talking about finding that rare uncataloged USA trains piece that was never used and now suddenly you see it. I watch estate sales and such because you have to wonder what happens to these trains when a collector dies, Are they sold? Are they passed down? Are they just thrown away? Sometimes when a collector dies, the living family members just don't know anything about the train collection on hand. One day I saw a very rare USA trains car that has been out of production for years. As a matter of fact it was made before USA trains even came to be, it was originally made by Charles RO who eventually became USA trains. This was one of the first productions Charles RO pre-USA trains era cars. I found a Charlse RO brand new never opened Flat car with a log load. Charlse RO himself sent out employees into the woods to cut real wood from trees to make this particular car. This was from a estate sale ad the person selling it had info from a hobby shop on what these trains were, most of them was LGB except this one. The asking price was $100, I didn't argue and paid it. There was only one other one I ever saw and it went on ebay for $200 and have not seen another since. I posted a picture for all to enjoy. I believe in runnng things and not just putting it on a shelf, so it does get run occasionally and carefully.

    USA GP30 #3014 & #3017 history

I own 2 USA GP-30 locomotives, #3014 and #3017. USA trains now uses research to find real road numbers so now you can take you G scale adventure even further and find out the history on your locomotives. I will start off with my USA GP-30 locomotive #3014. Rio Grande bought the GP-30 #3014 new from EMD in 1963. Locomotive #3014 was in a terrible wreck in Crater, Colorado in 1968 and was rebuilt by EMD and when it was repainted, it recieved the big Rio Grande lgo on it. Rio Grande sold #3014 to Cimarron Valley Railroad where is still runs the rails today under a new coat of blue paint, but the original #3014 was still kept. Rio Grande GP-30 #3017 was also bought new in 1963 by Rio Grande, but wasn't so lucky. It was sold for scrap in 1996

Crunching multiple numbers with USA trains

    Hi,
Everyone has their own idea of what a railroad should be and how it should operate. I look at many railroad sets and operations at the train shows. Some just run a mixed freight with mixed locomotives pulling it, or some just run a passenger service. It' amazes me how different each layout and set up can be, although alot of them simliar, none really the same. I myself run "dedicated type trains", that means my trains are not mixed freight and only have certain types freight fro each train I run. For example, My new Heritage series SD-70MAC which is also hooked up to another USA trains Rio Grande SD-70MAC running as a double header pulls a string of 55ft center flow hopper cars and 55ft modern tank cars, thats it. Sometimes dedicated trains get even more extreme, only pulling just tank cars or just center flow hopper cars. Thanx to USA using making trains with mulitple road numbers, a person like me who runs dedicated trains can run a string of the same road name rail cars. In the early 2000, USA trains started producing mutiple road numbers on trains, starting withe the locomotives of course. then they moved on to freight cars starting with the single dome tank car (Not to be confused with the 55ft tank car) and the 70 ton coal hopper. At this time they were making up to 6 different road numbers on some of the more popular items such as the 70 ton hopper car. I bought all 6 road numbers at the time. Today I'm glad that I did, USA has cut back some time ago down to only 4 multiple road numbers for the more popular road names and rail cars. I have 2 Rio Grande 70 ton hopper cars in road numbers that USA no longer makes, making them very rare. Now they have even made multiple road number on the cabooses so you can run 2 trains and actually have 2 different cabooses.

On another note: For those also interested in running dedicated trains, here is a list of dedicated trains I run below V.

Train #1 USA 55ft centerflow hopper cars (9) & 55ft modern tank cars (9) pulled by 2 USA trains SD-70MACS

    Train #2 USA 50ft reefer cars (9) & 50ft box cars (6) pulled by 3 USA trains SD40-2 locos

Train #3 USA 70 ton hopper cars (12) with coal load pulled by 2 USA trains GP-9

Train #4 USA 40ft box cars (6) & USA single dome tanks (9) pulled by USA trains F3 ABBA lash up (4 locomotives)

Trains #5 Dedicated to flat service, this train only pulls flat type cars, this was inspired by me when reading a article in Garden Railways called "Dedicated Flat service" There are 11 flat type cars and will be adding 2 more this year, they are pulled by 2 USA trains GP-30 locos

Train #6 Dedicated MOW train, there is only MOW type rail cars on this train, all which are USA, so far I only been able to collect 8, I'm looking for 4 more, but real rare, this is pulled ny a USA trains NW-2 Cow and Calf loco.

How to pick that right tarnsformer for your layout

    Hi,

To avoid costly mistakes like me, I will go over what to look for when shopping for a tarsnformer if you choose track power. First you have to know your locomotives requirements, lets take USA locomotives for example, they love the power and use alot of it. So for example you could get away using just a 10 amp power supply for 1 locomotive. Know the secifications on the transformer you are shopping for, some just rate their transformers in amps, but you have to know volts and amperage go hand in hand so for instance a transfomer may have 10 amps but only 12 volts to back up the amperage. Volts is defined as a potential difference across a conductor when a current of 1 amp disipates into 1 watt of power. Next you have to know what kind of trains you want to pull, how heavy they are and how many you want to pull. The reason I say this part is because for example, you go out and buy a Ford Ranger pickup truck and then later to decide to buy a 28ft travel trailer, there is no way this combination would work, even if you tried, the vehicle wouldn't last long. There is a pulling force needed to run your trains, pretty much like there is torque needed to pull with your pick up truck and NOT horsepower. The pulling force in the G scale train world is measures in ounces. Electric locomotives uses amperage to pull with and each locomotive will max out at a certain amperage and with a load applied, the locomotive will reach it's max amperage fast. Just like you need horsepower to back up the torque in your pickup for pulling, you need volts to back up the amps in your locomotive. The higher the transformer voltage, the less sooner is runs out of max amps allowing you to pull more. You also need to know the specifications of the max voltage your locomotive is safely allowed to run on. To measure the pulling force of any train, use a spring loaded ounce scale. For example, it takes 10 amps for my 3 USA GP40-2 locomotives to pull 17 50ft reefer cars & 50ft box cars which are real heavy to go at a decent rate of speed, if this transformer was anything less than a 24 volt systems it would burn out or I would not to be able to go very fast.

USA locomotives are safe to run on up to 24 volts which is considered high voltage in the train world since most people only run up to 12 volts. I myself run Bridgewerks 24 volt transformers which limit me to what accessories such as lights and sounds I can run on my locomotives. My transformers are all 15 amps, Bridgewerks makes a 20 amp transformer now, but it's not 100% radio controlled like mine, it's limited to just stop and go radio controls due to it's high amperage.

Shopping for transformers, check out Bridgewerks > www.bridgewerks.com

History on the USA #100 Rio Grande NW-2

Rio Grande only had 1 EMD NW-2 switcher in which they bought new in 1941. The switcher was originally numbered #7000 when put in service but was later renumbered to #100 in September 1941. I'm not sure why Rio Grande only bought 1 EMD NW-2 switcher, I can only guess maybe some they weren't happy with them since they mainly Alco switchers from 1941 to 1964 before going back to EMD and started buying the SW-1200. Rio Grande sold the #100 NW-2 to Great Lakes Steel factory in 1968. Then it was sold again at a unknown time period to the East Camden and Highland Railroad where they invested alot of TLC, repainted it in a orange and white paint scheme, then it was renumbered to #62. It still resides there today as far as I know along with 3 other switcher locomotives. The railroad provides what they call a "Each" storage and switching service. Rio Grande never really owned a NW-2 calf locomotive. I use my USA NW-2 and a calf unit to pull my work train, I use the calf because the NW-2 by itself won't do the job, the train is too heavy for just the 1 locomotive.

I'll set you straight on one little detail.

1:22.5 is the Official G scale ratio.

1:20.3 is not G scale; it is known as F scale! If you saw standard gauge F Scale trains, you'd know it! They're Huge compared to even 1:22.5 and especially 1:32!!

They are all No. 1 Guage, but the scale is a much different beast!

    USA history SD40-2 Rio Grande 5378,5379 & 5380

The EMD SD40-2 locomotives were Rio Grande's biggest success story, especially after they were retrofited with turbos, thus given them the true model designation of SD40-2T. They were also better known and nick named "tunnel motors". I own 3 USA SD40-2 Rio Grande locomotives and run them as a triple header, #5378, #5379 and #5380. USA was suppose to produce 2 more numbers later on, #5381 and #5382, but that never happened.

Lets take a look at the history of the real locomotives in the numbers I have. Rio Grande bought EMD SD40-2 #5378 new in 1977, it was later repainted to Southern Pacific paint scheme after the Southern Pacific merger. In 2002 is was repainted again to Union Pacific colors as Union Pacific bought Rio Grande in 1988. Then it was renumbered to #8577. It was the repainted again to Western Pacific paint scheme in February 2007. By March 2007 is was to worn out for repairs and the engine was removed to become a gen set.

Rio Grande SD40-2 #5379 was also bought new in 1977, in 1999 it was repainted to Union Pacific paint scheme and was renumbered to #4063. Then it was renumbered again to #8635 in 2000. In January 2004 it was sold to GECX railroad who kept the #8635. It was resold again in a uknown time period to HLCX Railroad who then renumbered it to #6145, It still resides with that railroad as far as I know.

Rio Grande SD40-2 #5380 was bought new in 1977. It was repainted to Southern Pacific paint scheme after the merger, but the original number was kept. In 1999, it was repaint to Union Pacific colors and renumbered ro #4064, then it was runumbered again to #8634 in 2000. It was sold to HLCX railroad and renumbered to #6146 where it still resides today as far as I know. HLCX stands for Helm Leasing Company. GECX stands for GE Transportaion systems.

Picture #2 My USA Rio Grande SD40-2 #5379

Special Note: Rio Grande bought the EMD SD40-2T locomotives starting from 1974 with #5341 all the way to 1980 ending with #5413, making this model the biggest purchase in Rio Grandes history with a whopping 74 EMD SD40-2T locomotives bought in 6 years.

Thank you vey much for that info, I have to admit I have not seen any F scale trains nor do I know much about them. But if you research Bachmans web site they are advertising 1:20.3 scale ratio cars as large scale narrow gauge, you can see for yourself at www.bachmanntrains.com I just assumed it was G scale.I try to research things before putting them in my blog, but sometimes I do over look things. Thanx for taking the time to read my articles. Is there a site maybe were I could read up on F scale? I really didn't even know F scale existed until about 2 months ago when I seen a ad in Garden railways with a heading "what is F scale". I wonder why Garden Scale Railways never covered F scale in their magazine unless when they talk about the 1:20.3 scale ratio they just leave out the fact that scale is considered to be F scale. I'm just a curious person. I also like bigger trains, I think my next move when I retire, I'll buy the ride on trains, they are neat. I also don't see any F scale trains advertised in that magazine unless they are all custom made and not commercially available since how Garden Railways is suppose to be a "large" scale railroad magazine.

My being the curious person I went to Accucrafts offical website to see how they list thier 1:20.3 scale ratio products and was suprised. They do advertise 1:20.3 scale ratio as a "FN" scale and 1:32 as gauge 1 then 1:24 as 1/2 scale. I did not see what they were calling their 1:29 scale ratio that the AMS division is making.

I then paid a visit to Custom Model Products who specializes in 1:20.3 scale, they just advertise their 1:20.3 scale as 45 mm narrow gauge and 1:32 scale ratio as their 45 mm standard gauge.

I then looked up Rich Yoder Models another brass manufacturer of 1:20.3 models and they also list their models like Bachman does, just as a large scale.

So I can see why I never knew about F scale, if manufacturers don't advertise them as a F scale how would anyone know? I looked at a Accucraft advertisement for their 1:20.3 products and that is how they are advertised, by their scale ratio of 1:20.3 and 45mm gauge, not by the scale of "FN" in Garden Railways Magazine until you visit the official site.

These are just a couple of 1:20.3 scale ratio manufacturers I did have time to research on. So I did learn more about how common the phrase " Gauge 1" or "45mm" gauge can be, it covers alot of different types and scale ratio models, then even a total different scale altogether.

These designations have taken time to get in place. Its a manner of the train coming before the designation!!

Bachmann products are in true sense Fn3' or Fn36," just like HOn3 is to HO. nobody I know of makes standardguage F!!

Now I did discover two things today myself. In reading a back issue of Model Railroader, I came across an advertisement for I do believe Marklin advertising the new I scale. What ratio is it? 1:32!

Somewhere I even ran across a mention of 1:29 being proprietary to one company.

Anyhow, concerning Bachmann; in the early big hualler days, they produced 1:20.3 engines, but the rest of their stuff was smaller in scale, perhaps 1:24 or even smaller. Today Bachmann is producing faithful 1:20.3 models, proper Fn3 models, and they are putting out a lot of nice stuff. If I was running F, I would have no problems running smaller locomotives and such because that is the nature of narroguage - unless they were specific prototypes of things like diesels. Steam locomotives have the advantage that every one of them looks about the same even when they are diferent sizes!!

The best way to remember it is that "guage' refers Only to the width of the tracks. This is either in Millimeters for the model width or in feet/inches/meters if it is the full size version. 'Standard guage' is 56.5"; anything below that, in american practice, has an "N" after the scale letter designation and a w for wider then standard guage.

Scale refers only to the real proporiton of the model to the real world prototype.

The Garden scales are interesting because they essentially kept the guage the same and tried to call the Guage G, when it is No.1 instead. You can have No. 1 guage with HO scale models, it would simply look rather funny - it would be HOw20' or something like that!!

There is a lot of material about this stuff on wikipedia around the world under a number of entries. have fun!!

History on USA Rio Grande SD-70 #5508 & Heritage

Hi, today we are going to research some history. I own a Heritage Series USA SD-70MAC locomotive in the Heritage series and a SD-70MAC in the regular Rio Grande paint scheme also from USA Trains. Looking at Rio Grandes history first you will know they they never really bought any SD-70MACS because Rio Grande was bought by Union Pacific in 1988 and was in long financial troubles before then, hidering the purchase of much needed locomotives to replace those wore out SD40-2 Locomotives. The newest EMD SD model that Rio Grande owned was the SD-50. So USA Trains made a compromise and used the locomotive numbers from Rio Grande SD-50 roster to put on their SD-70MACS. I own a USA SD-70MAC Rio Grande #5508. In real life Rio Grande #5508 was a EMD SD-50 Bought new in 1984. By August 2001 it was repainted to the Union Pacific colors after the buy out and re-numbered to #9852. In June of 2007 Union Pacific retired the locomotive, unknown if it was sold for scrap or sold to a leasing company such as HLCX

My Rio Grande Heritage series #1989 is also a USA SD-70MAC. In real life the Rio Grande Heritage series was actually a SD-70ACe. Union Pacific painted this in what they called a heritage paint shceme and numbered it for the year it was painted and commmorated.

Picture #1 Is my USA SD-70MAC with Rio Grande SD-50 number 5508
Picture #2 Is my USA SD-70MAC in the Rio Grande Heritage series
Picture #3 Is My USA SD-70MAC and Heritage Series lashed up on a dedicated 55ft hopper and 55ft tank car train all of which are USA trains too.

NOTE: The Heritage series has now taken over the most popular train to be requested over my USA F3 ABBA, giving my F3 ABBA much needed rest and time for replacing some over due worn parts. My USA F3 ABBA ran about 8 hours a weekend since 2000

Special Note: All in all USA did a great job on both units even though Rio Grande never had thos type equipment, it's close enough for me.

List of USA trains woodside Reefers

Todays economy is in shambles which means manufacturers will be cutting production back harder and harder, especially in the non essentials market such as hobbies. USA trains is no different, here is a list of USA trains woodside reefer cars, some in short supply, some no longer produced and you will see that in the missing numerical stock numbers on this list. Please note, this is not a list of old Charles RO trains. Notice how the stock numbers jump between each other. Starting with stock number R16001 and so far the last stock number is R16337. That means USA has built 340 different paint schemed woodside reefer cars to date, see how many of these stock numbers are missing? Note: the first 2 reefer cars have the old Charles RO numbers, just like the work train series, USA decided to carry these over and keep producing them under the same number. Anything in blue is a hyperlink and you can click on it to view a picture.

EMD trainmans most wanted list FOUND!!!!!!

HI, I'm excited to say I found 3 out of 4 trains from my EMD trainmans most wanted USA trains list in one of my past posts. I found USA Trains "work train series" part #R1822 Rio Grande work flat car, R1882 Rio Grande wheel car and R1892 Rio Grande truck car. I'm still looking for the Rio Grande USA Rail and tie car. this was an exciting find since how I explained that USA Trains is making the "work train series" in the MOW road name only now and all others have been discontinued. Where did I find these you might ask? From none other than my own source, Charles RO, he still had some of these old discontinued USA Trains laying around. I gave it a shot and looked on his site thinking maybe he still had some of these new just sitting and collecting dust and sure enough. Charles RO is mainly real big into Lionel trains for those O scalers who like to read my threads. You can visit Charles RO here at www.charlesro.com I hear he has a great Lionel O scale set up in the show room

Picture #1 shows my find, I can't wait to put them in action

    EMD trainman hits 4000 mark

Hi, I would like to take the time out to thank everyone who read my threads in this section. I'm glad to see my section has now over 4,000 views, quite honestly I never thought I would get that many. I'm glad to see that trains are still an interesting subject in this world of "HI-TECH" copmuters and games. I will go on to report updates, news and whats new on my Railroad.
