Ok, i have desided i would like to get some nice o scale equipment... more for just play than actual modeling... but that doesnt mean real life is thrown out the door... im thinking about doing a small door layout... So i started looking at the MTH h-10-44 switcher... looks nice... what i really want is something with sound! any opinons? or any of those engines that have some scale dimension?

Edit: small switcher is perfered, but none of thes box cabs or anything like that, more along the lines of h-10-44, sw's, and so forth

The MTH H-10-44 is a scale sized engine. It will run on O31 track and you can get scale sized cars that will run on that tight a curved track. I haven't heard the sound in the FM H-10-44 but the Railking SW1500 which looks to scale sized has nice EMD sounds. Atlas sells the SW9 and it has sounds too and is a scale engine. Weaver sells the Baldwin VO-1000 and it has generic engine sounds and is a good runner.

What size door were you planning on? I put up an oval with O42 curves and used O27 manual switches for my boys. They ran the trains and built cities out of legos, good entertainment for them.

Cool! From another Red Green fan!

You said it's scale sized. Does that mean wheels, etc? Like some S scale items? Or is this still the big tinplate flanged stuff?

The cab, hood are scale sized. The steps and pilot are detached and swing with the truck like the Lionel GP9's. The couplers are also like Lionels and the wheels have the big flanges. They are made for tight radius curves and have the center roller. Some are easier to convert to scale than others. The FM originally was a Premier engine and the SW1500 has been a Railking all along. My son has the SW1500 and it looks good to me. I need to get out the drawings and scale ruler and measure to know for sure. MTH also has Alco switchers and a couple of EMD early switchers. IIRC MTH has sound now for all its engines.

I want to get away with having a small door lay out, so that means the big flanged stuff... but at the same time, i dont want it to look rediclous... i know that it will look kinda silly with equipment navigating those sharp curves... but at the same time, i still like the thought of o scale.... I have developed a way that i made a door lay out that will swivel around so i can have On30 on one side and then i can just flip it over after i take off all the equipment and play with o27 stuff. im still working it all out but it was a really good comprimise for apartment style living... but it is still a work in progress.

If you are ok with O27 sized cars, MTH makes a Railking F3 that fits the O27 cars perfectly. Even then O27 cars are rather ambiguous for size. Some are close to S gauge (1/64) some like Lionel’s 6464 series box cars scale out to about (1/56) with O scale being a true (1/48). Confused :D welcome to the club. I finally decided to make a small switching layout on a 36" wide hollow core door using Atlas 2-Rail track and their early switches. No continues running but I can run an engine and a few cars around and have my operations. :D

I really want to get just a few cars, about 10 or so, so i can do some switching... definately going with the electro couplers on the engine.... just so i can do all the fun stuff... yeah this is all confusing... though i saw those cool deals where you can see roller bearing caps rolling along... that fits my fancy well, i will always do N Scale, because i like long trains, but O scale looks like it will be fun for switching... even thought it is out of scale, i can make it look as close as possible... thanks guys! keep suggestions rolling

Would be interesting to see how you do this project. If you build it, be sure and post some photos.

If you choose your cars right, you can get short scale cars from Atlas and MTH with the turning end caps on the trucks. If you want to see what I did on a door, I can shoot you some jpg images. I don't have continous running but I sure can switch. :D
