You have probably heard the reports of the derailment of a Paris-London Eurostar train in France.

The train was travelling at about 150 mph, and only the truck of the lead power car was derailed! The train stayed upright, straight, and the emergency brakes brought it to a stand with no fatalities, and only minor injuries. A tribute to the safety built into these trains and the track!!

The cause is thought to be a problem with the transmission on the locomotive, a part may have come detached and derailed the wheels. These trains, and the TGV from which they are derived have an excellent safety record. [IMG]

That is amazing and great news that there were no serious injuries!

    Hi Alan,

Just want to add a bit to your post. Train involved was #9047, like you said en route from Paris Gare du Nord to London Waterloo International. The trainset involved was 3101/3102 (SNCB owned), 3102 was leading. Happened near Croisilles. Train was going about 200-250 km/h at the time. Driver was accelerating back to top speed after hearing a sound in the power car and slowing the train. 3 trucks de-railed. The trailing truck on the leading power car on 3102 the truck immediately behind it on car R1, and one of the trucks on the trailing power car on 3101.

The transmission assembly on the leading power cars trailing truck failed, and when it broke apart it derailed the truck in question, and the other 2 trucks. I have a picture of the transmission of the Eurostar if anyone would like to see, but i dont think i can post pictures on here.

Ok Alan, i figured out how to post a pic on here

This is a picture of the transmission on a TGV. The Eurostar uses the exact same kind of transmission and drive train. This is what came apart on the train.
