What is your favourite train ride you have taken? It is a simple question! Mine would be Via Rail Canada to Jasper, Ab. Great scenery, and even in coach the service was okay. I would have prefered no smoking though, as I almost died when I was in the dome. Happy Railroading!! Dane N. ------------------ TAMR2860-AKA BC Rail King TAMR2860@Canada.com for TAMR info. I like VIA's Montreal - Toronto run, for me, you get both, city side and countyside...The silver and Blue cars are beautiful and I dont think that has been topped as far as , service, ride enjoyment and convienience goes. Thats my opinion. Bannon ------------------ Bannon C Woods Jr VIA Rail Canada Safety, Health & Environment
For me it must be the Durango and Silverton, Photographer's Special...something about old K-47's, fall aspen trees and the High Line that is all too perfect!
My favorite although no longer in operation was the Pioneer from Ogden, Ut. to Portland. The scenery was awesome & the train had a homey feel to it. Reggie ------------------
Unfortunately another "no longer runs" tourist/railfan operation, the Collis P. Huntington Chapter NRHS "New River Train" powered by Nickel Plate Berk 765, up through the New River Gorge with all of the fall colors. Fantastic. Would go again in a minute.
Amtrak's Cardinal from Cincinnati to Charlottesville. Scenery is great and Charlottesville is a great town to spend a weekend in.
This'll make you happy BC, the CP from Vancouver to I think Chicago in the late '50s with an open observation car and great food. I remember the Conductor throwing out fusees about every 30sec. because we were only going about 20mph and there was traffic behind us. The portion through the Canadian Rockies was a life experience. Another breathtaking ride was from Madrid to Malaga, a daylight run through what had to be Spain's grand canyon, we were going up, down, left, right, helixes through mountains. Up one valley, down the other. A really great run. ------------------ When in doubt, empty your magazine.
I have two favourites from days gone by. The first was the train trip from Johannesburg to Capetown in South Africa. I was 7 years old at the time. This was in the days of steam. The next was a trip from Toronto to Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. I was in the airforce then. The section along the north shore of Lake Superior is one of the best scenic areas in the country. ------------------ Robin Maberly and Tayside
