Boy, you guy's that model the modern era are lucky! There's new stuff all the time coming out, yet I'm stuck with the same 40' footer's from M/T or Penzee for my fifties layout.
I don,t know anything about american locos, but I was looking trough the photos from my California trip last October and found this: (This is taken by my friend Peer Hovland) Is this a GP-40?
I don't know the UP locos, but the front unit looks like a GP38, and the rear looks like a GP40. UP has everything though, so they could have way different names. -Robert
I did a search on "Union pacific 622" on google, and Atlas says it is GP-40. Atlas actually have 622 in N-scale. But it is a lot of details on the model that don't match on the real thing... EDIT: I found some other pictures of 622 saying it is GP-38... [ January 08, 2006, 11:07 AM: Message edited by: Heine Pedersen ]
It looks like the pic of the real "622" is a GP40 that has been fitted with a GP38 hood and is now in yard duty as a "RCU" remote control unit. Look at the trucks in the pic, they are standard Blomberg style trucks, not the newer high-adhesion style. Just a guess.
It's a GP38-2... former MP 2122, built 01/75 UP has renumbered its locomotives several times over the years...
Rob Kluz, Will AZL offer the SD70 versions in undecorated for those who want to model lessor roadnames or those roads that no longer exist, but at one time had SD70 power? Example being Santa Fe? Being a Santa Fe fan I will definitely be getting at least one SD70 in BNSF, but what about Santa Fe or BNSF in the Red/Yellow/Silver Warbonnet paint schemes? This is the reasoning behind me asking if Undec's are a possibility! Thanks in advance for your answer! Tim p.s. Look forward to getting the Z Track in the mail! Thanks!
At this point, AZL is not planning on releasing undecorated SD70s. They are planning on releasing them in a large selection of roadnames over time. I imaging they will release most if not all North American roadnames since this locomotive will be part of their catalog for some time. Knowing AZL's commitment to realism, they will not release 'fantasy' locomotive like so often happens in other scales. Rob Kluz
Since Tim is putting in his request, so am I. For the CSX version, I want CSX 700. I need AC power to get me up those steep hills. None of that weak SD70M I hope. Tim, for you, I guess is back to the stripper.
Well, I have to put in my request for some white nosed green BN units, letered for SD60's, as the SD60 looks identical to the SD70's to me. -Robert
UPDATE - All SD70 variants will have a snowplow, but it can only be used with the optional front plate, which requires that one remove the truck mounted coupler. The optional front plate has an opening for the AZL coupler though. The ditchlights will not be working, but the main headlight(s) will The first three releases will be NS SD70M, UP SD70M and CN SD75I. The will be available early this spring. Rob Kluz
Will do Steve! As for couplers, there are basically two versions used in Z scale today. One is the Marklin hook coupler. The second is the Micro-Trains couplers. MTL couplers are much more realistic. AZL designed their couplers to be used with MTL couplers. The couplers though are too different to be used with Marklin. Take a look at the latest images of the SD70. You will see the AZL coupler in the front. Rob Kluz
So Rob, is there a replacement kit to change AZL coupler to Marklin coupler? And is it easy to do the converting on an AZL loco.? Sorry for asking all these dumb questions. Thanks Tsa
No, we don't have a replacement for the Marklin coupler (note, MTL has offered Marklin style couplers in compatible boxes in the past). What I would do is buy an MTL box car with Marklin couplers. I would then replace one coupler with a MTL coupler and use it as a hybrid car so you can use both Marklin and MTL couplers. We do this trick all the time in our club. Rob Kluz
