Kato should start worrying now as the new Atlas locos are really pulling away in the lead. As you know, I am an N Scaler, but I have to say I am VERY impressed with Matt's new GP38 The level of detail, and the fine-scale look of the details is superb! No i haven't got one yet(limited funds right now! ) but i'll try to see what i can do about that... I'm pretty sure they got the usual Atlas wheel setup(i haven't checked) and if so they should work flawless... The only thing i didn't like about the GP40 besides the truck hangers was the drop steps- they just didn't look right. I don't recall how the 38s are though...
I gotta agree, the new GP38's are nice! I hadn't planned to pick one up, but I fell in love with the CSX one; it was just begging to be detailed, weathered, and thrown into an Espee consist! A neat touch are the seperate exhaust stacks that have the correct taper, which couldn't have been done if they were molded in place. The drop steps are the same as on the GP40, but the main gripe I have with the unit, and the GP40 before it, besides the cab, is that the corner boarding steps are too shallow; compare them to something else, like an Athearn GP40-2, to see what I mean. I'm guessing the shallowness was a compromise done in the moldmaking process in order to make the steps see-through, and still let the shell release from the molding machine...no problem, I'll just find some A-Line etched steps that'll fit!
