Hey Group; looks like its been a while since anyone has been on..I was wondering if anyone has ever made a GP39 using an Athearn GP38-2 as a starting point? Also has anyone made a slug to go with it? what did you use for it? Thanks for any info.

    be alert..don't get hurt..

I think Bob Miller made a GP39-2... You might want to get his attention and see what he did.

I have contemplated this task in N scale. We have good starting points, but it depends on what kind of compromises you are willing to make (we do not have the luxury of Cannon & Co. EMD doors and parts). Using a GP 38/38-2 means you will have to replace the dual exhaust stacks with a turbocharger stack. Using a GP40/40-2 as a starting point means you have the turbo stack, but have to change the radiator fans from 3 to 2. Obviously, going from a GP38-2 to a GP39 means you would have to do away with the Dash 2 spotting features, such as the water sight glass, cab overhang, trucks, as well as other items. You would need to check the door arangements, because I know they vary from 38 to 40, and probably on the 39.
As always, prototype photos will be your best aid.

I had not contemplated the slug project, but I thought I had read somewhere that the original starting point was a GP7/9? [IMG]

That's an interesting shot of CSX GP38 2009... That DB hatch is different. I didn't think that was the normal style on the 38s so i checked a few other pics and they are 'normal'. Is that unit rebuilt with DBs?

No, actually it is a modification to add the paper air filter box. I remember that Southern did this to their GP38's, leaving the "chopped off" DB blister. Notice that on the GP38-2 it has a totally square look, while on the GP38, the top of the box was actually tapered.
