For your kitbash: Could you use an SD45 long hood and cut it down? I can't really tell from the photo, however, it looks like the the radiators resemble those used on the GP40X which had two large panels.

Interestingly, this one claims it's an SD40X, but doesn't have the Flare

The first SD40X built (EMD 434) did not have flared radiators... it went to the GM&O (950) and eventually ICG then IC.

EMD built eight more SD40X, numbered 434A-434H... these eventually were sold to UP (3040-3047). 3046 is on the W&LE, the others I haven't tracked...

434A-434F had flared radiators, 434G and 434H did not.

What was the reason for the flare?
I assumed it was to fit the equippment, but clearly they could fit it without the flare.

Just a guess,,, the surface area of the radiator (cooling) area could be increased by angling them.

Close... the radiator cores are already at an angle (except in a SD4xT-2, xP15AC, xP15T and GP15-1)

They form a V inside the hood. Add the grills on the side to make an M.

The flare is to accomodate a taller core...
