It's good to see you all again. I've been gone for a long time due to poor health. I had to give up my model train gig on About.com too. However, after being given 4 - 6 weeks to live back in April, I seem to be beating the medical predictions. Giving up on medicine has a lot to do with that.

Sadly, my 4'x8' N scale Kato Unitrack layout was taken down and put away... along with the few precious TT scale items I'd gathered in the hopes of having a TT scale door layout to take to the shows.

Last week I bought myself some Marklin Z scale stuff. I'm enjoying putting together a small layout on a desktop. But I noticed that the rails seem to get dirty VERY fast.

I asked my LHS owner for the cleaner I used to use, but he told me everyone uses Goo Gone these days. First I'd heard of that one, but I have to say it does a better job than anything I've seen.

    Best!

Hello, Randall. It is always very positive to hear from people who have been away and can return, but your case is special in that sense. I am pleased to learn that you have a new 'lease on life'. Good that you can enjoy Z scale conveniently, too.

Many people have begun to use auto alloy-metal wheel polishes, such as Mother's and Black Magic. It is a runny cream, a l'il dab 'll do ya, and scrub the track heads with a cloth. Wipe them clean after letting the stuff sit for a minute. The proponents claim that it does a great job...and lasts!!

Glad to see you back. Sorry to learn the reason for your time away. I can sympathize, as I was struck down right after Christmas, nearly fatal and am still struggling along. Slow, slowly. Good thing to have hobbies and great place to hang out!

Re: Goo Gone- Use it sparingly. It has an odor, and a slightly oily residue.

Nice that you're back Randall. Although I don't know you, glad you were able to put your health concerns behind you and get back to enjoying trains.

Thanks for the tip on rail cleaning. Filing it in the "a-ha!" file.
