StickyMonk, if you don't find any to buy, it is easy to make your own.
First you form some brass shim stock from an auto parts store, to the size and shape you want.
Second you get a piece of hard wood like oak or mayple. Lay each foot plate of the steps upside down on top of the wood block, letting the toe plate hang down. Color the bottom of each foot plate with a marks a lot, then scratch a grid of lines to look like screen wire.
Third, take a sewing needle, and a small hammer, and gently punch perforating holes (at each intersection of the lines) that just berely go thru the shim stock. This can also be done faster if you have a drill press. Do not turn it on, just use it as a punch press and set the depth stop. Each hole will be exact then.
Try it on a piece of scrap first to get the hang of it.
With practice you can probably finish all the steps by 2006. But feel the top side of the steps, it is real non-skid surface.
This process was called "Shark Skinned" and was made on dies that used phonograph needles. You may have seen a larger version on tire patch kits for bicycle tires.
You can also make very tiny rivets this way.
It is an old super-detailer's trick.

Don't despair, Stickymonk....try some different A-Line steps, you never know what may fit. Oddly enough, the steps they make for the Athearn GP38-2/40-2/50 fit the Kato SD40 and SD45 perfectly! I found this out by accident. You might have to experiment around to find something close, then do a little trimming to get a good fit.

Sticky, you didn't tell us what your shop did about the missing steps? Do your enginemen have to jump off and on? Do they carry a ladder on each engine now? Maybe you could weld some Pullman car steps on temporarilly! [IMG]
