    Hello everyone,

I am returning to model railroading after a long time away since my father introduced me to RR modeling as a child. We had an N scale layout with which I learned the (very)basics on. I am now a father myself and am planning a layout for my son and I to model. My interest is in 1960s - 1980s diesels and prototyping the Vermont Railway in z scale. This forum is a great resource for beginners like me and it has already answered many of the questions I have through browsing the topic threads. Just researching, reading, and learning as much as I can before making any moves. I thank all of the experienced modelers for their wisdom and I look forward to learning much more here.

    Regards,
    Matt

Hi Matt, Welcome. Glad to have you on board. From New York and modelling the VTR suggests you might be familiar with Hoosick Jct. Though your modelling era is after the Rutland's Corkscrew Division was abandoned and torn up. Looking forward to seeing photos of what you create.

Yes but I only learned about Hoosick recently. I was going to model contemporary times because the engines are easier to find in z scale. So in researching the current VTR system I learned Hoosick was the interchange with pan am for the limestone slurry train headed for the paper mills in Maine. Recently a tunnel on the line started collapsing so they've since rerouted that train over necr tracks. I live on Long Island but have been through most of New England quite a bit. I chose Vermont because of great memories visiting family around Middlebury, VT. So a western Vermont railroad is perfect! Plus, I love the red/white paint scheme of the VTR and they ran Alco rs3s, one of my favorite locos, through the early 80s. Not familiar with the corkscrew although I'm picking through a book titled "The Rutland Road". I'm sure I can find more about it there. Thanks for the nice reply!
