I have started redoing ho cars both hopper and box with new paint and I am looking for advice on how to apply decals. Any good how to videos out there for beginners? I would prefer stencils and spray paint but I can't find any stencils in HO RR.

Micro-sol and Micro-set are pretty much essentials, as well as gloss and matte clear coats. For decals, the hardest part is finding the right ones for the job. Microscale is a good place to start, but there are a lot of smaller specialty printers that have different decals for more obscure models and roads.

    Basic steps:
    Gloss coat model
    Wet decal
    Apply micro-set (blue bottle)
    Transfer decal onto model
    Apply micro-sol (red bottle)
    Matte coat to seal

Another option can be dry transfers. They aren’t as common as decals, so you won’t be able to find them for every prototype, but if you do find one in the scheme you are looking for, they don’t require the solutions that decals do. They are burnished onto the model surface and that is basically it. Kato includes dry transfers with some of their passenger cars for renumbering.

For videos, don’t limit yourself to train videos. Automobile and military modelers have lots of useful techniques and products that railroaders can use too.
