Ah, the good old Athern Blue Box cars. I lost count of how many of those I kit bashed to make something else. Looking good so far.
Got some more done. I filled in some windows and one of the doors. I also, enlarged some windows and cut new ones into the sides. The other door will need to be modified... and, the steps will have to be removed on both sides up front. Funny thing... I took the time to tape up the sides when modifying the roof and sanding it. The car I picked has smooth sides... so, I had to remove all the details that I spend time protecting! LOL! JMS
LOL that happens to me more and more. What a fantastic job and a tutorial on how to refurbish an Athearn BB model.
Had to go all the way back to page 3 to find this thread. I picked up a couple of Roundhouse 50' hoppers this weekend. Here is the first one all prettied up for the layout. I added the sign boards to the side and did my best to make it look well used. BTW, there is a tribute to our own Tomm Holly as a thanks for hosting one of my cars. I noticed that I need to go back and work on the CNW herald a bit more. Thanks, Dale
I got nothing done this week although a lot of projects are in various phases of construction. I took a couple of in progress pictures on some of them. Atlas Phase II C-425 Locomotive. Removed the cast on *#*@* dynamic brake unit (What a PITA), filled in the resulting hole and also filled in two of the inlet screens to match the prototype. This will end up as a New Haven unit, still have to do a C-424 and C-425 for the Wabash, again no dynamic brakes. Atlas 3560CF ACF Covered Hopper kit, removed the cast on roofwalk and am smoothing everything out prior to installing the supports for a Plano Roofwalk, this really dresses up the car and makes it look outstanding when done. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski
Got some more work done on the ACF Covered Hopper and the C-425! All the roof supports are on, the car will be painted prior to installing the new roofwalk as most ACF cars left the roofwalk in natural metal. Most of the lift rings and the air intake rain shields have been installed, need to install some grabs that do not interfere with the decals, the rest will be installed later. Rick J
On my work bench are two cranes. One is an Athearn 200 ton variety, the other a Walthers 25 ton American powered crane. Both need the rigging done. Any suggestions?
I take a long length of black thread and rub diluted white glue on it and let it hang with a clothes pin on the end to keep it straight while it dries. Then I cut it to size and glue it where it needs to go. I'm sure there's other methods but that's how I've always done it.
Thanks, Paul. That dredger was moved on a set of rails that was laid on the ground. They could also be mounted on crawler tracks like this one.
