Can anybody tell me how to tell the difference between the original Aristo Craft RS3 and the newer model? In particular, I am very interested in finding out if I have the ball bearing power trucks on my unit. I would prefer to be able to find this out without having to take the engine apart, if that is at all possible. If I have the older trucks, I will be replacing them with the new ones.
    Thank you for your help.

Thank you for responding. I have found out the answer. The new power truck is for the FA/U25B and the RS3. It is a ball bearing unit, and it can be spotted by the following:
    1. No visible screw in the back (front?) of the power truck.
    2. The wheels have a slightly different profile, and are not plated or have a traction tire.
    3. The sideframes do not touch the axles.
I learned this from Don Sweet of RCS. I spent the day with him yesterday, and what a great guy. Very knowledgeable and helpful.
Several weeks ago I decided that RCS was the way I wanted to go with my first layout, and I travelled to Pennsylvania to Don's shop, and I can't tell you how happy I am that I did. Yes, the gas was expensive (although cheaper in PA), but the time spent with Don reassured me that I have made the right decision.
No, I am not an employee of RCS, only a VERY satified customer.

    Noel,
Thank -you for responding back with your findings on the trucks and the added info of RCS products. Sounds like you had a great day visiting RCS.

    Noel,
The Aristocraft FA units have long been redsigned about 4 years ago. Aristocraft totally redesigned the FA except for the body shape mold because of constant complaints. The FA was lowered back to prototype height as it should have been in the first place and finally they started to use better motors with ball bearings in them. Unfortunately Aristocraft doesn't like changing part numbers, you can go 10 years back and will still find same part numbers for certain items even if they were upgraded. I'm not 100% sure but I thought all Aristocraft locomotives have ball bearing units in them today. They finally redesigned the drive unit and motor block in the 2-8-0 consolidation steamer, it now has the Mikado motor block. You can thank the competion for Aristocraft finally improviong upon their products, they had to step up to the plate because of them.
