At left side of message, click on the desired user name or their avatar. A small black box pops up. Click on "Start A Conversation". Note- This is different from a "conversation" you might start, from within a user profile. This conversation is private unless you add others, option at bottom of the page for the message you are creating. When you create a conversation within a profile, it is in public view.
Ron, Also, look for "Inbox" in the bar at the upper right hand part of any page. That's your private message area. Instead of "private message" the terminology is now "conversation." It works better on this platform than the old one as a conversation may include two or more people. Charlie
Bump. It seems listing how to do private messages (now called "conversations") is not shown elsewhere. The above instructions work well.
When you use profile posts for messages, it's like using your speakerphone (everybody can hear you). Using "conversations" is as private as you want them to be.
