20 years I built a metal shell GP-18. I was very happy with how it came out and it sat on a shelf. I’m getting back into the hobby so I took the diesel down to give it a run. It was very dusty and I made the mistake of using a Q-tip dipped in alcohol to clean it. I’m now left with a ruined paint job. Anyone have a suggestion on how to correct this? Thanks
I may be looking at too simple of a solution, but... was it sprayed with a final coat of dull coat lacquer? Alcohol has been known to cause that white staining look when applied over lacquer... often just hitting it with another coat of clear lacquer (dull coat) resolves the issue. The down side is that you'll seal in all of the dirt that you haven't removed, but it's possible (no guarantee) that t might salvage the paint. You might want to try a small section, the worst care will be it needs to be stripped off with the rest of the paint. Good Luck!
If you think it may just be the whitening of a clear coat, remove the shell and scrub it in the sink with dish detergent and a toothbrush to remove any dirt and try a bit of new clear coat over where it's white. If that area clears up, spray the whole thing with a new clear cost. If the actual color coat has been damaged, yup, the only thing is strip and repaint. Doug
Thanks for the replies. I was thinking a cleat of clear might do the trick. Nothing to lose really. I want to install a decoder so when that job is taking place I’ll do as @Doug Gosha suggested and give it a mild cleaning then a shot of clear. I’ll update my results as to weather it is repairable.
Sounds like like Doug gave you the same thoughts... dull coat/clear coat issue (hopefully) that's an easy resolution.... good luck.
Update on this issue. I gave the shell a good dry brush cleaning and gave it 2 very light coats of dullcoat. This worked perfectly. Thanks to all who gave suggestions.
