Technically when I lived in Winnebago IL I was the same distance from IC/CN tracks but I now hear and see more trains as I live only a mile or two from the busy IC/CN main and Champaign Yard. Here is what I found not too far from my house in Champaign....

Seeing the CN is almost like a home coming for a New Englander to me. Guess I need to get some books on the CN and IC now!

Hey Jim, was the second unit behind 6120 #6941?

6120 was in Russel, KY yesterday sometime on a sulphur train and was departing for Clifton Forge, VA over the old C&O thru Charleston, WV.

Honestly, I don't remember as I took these pictures in late April. I'm so used to railfaning BNSF that I don't know much about the CN or former IC, but that will change!

Those look like they taken out around Leverett Rd. just N. of the Champaign Yard limits. Great Spot, BTW, Glad you are enjoying the neighborhood. Have you hit Slot and Wing Hobby Shop yet?
Would also highly recommend the IC historical society based in Paxton's old depot

Yeah I think that sounds right, I'll be back. Oh yeah I've been back to Slot & Wing, I've known Randy for years since when I lived here before in 98-00. I will have to check out Paxton though, I know when I lived in Rantoul there was an old ICG caboose at the Amtrak station.

How is it after a month? Summer is a good time for a two mile walk (one there and one back) with your camera to get some shots. These are great! Thanks.

    JIM,
That train probably went through Effingham an Mattoon, I over get to those places some.
Also, if you get a chance, drive over to the Monticello rail museum. It not that far from Champaign and well worth the trip.

Looking forward tow fall and winter as I can Railfan the CN from our house, the leaves cover it up during spring and summer. It is former Wisconsin Central Trackage north of Chicago. Probably the best hing about the CN in Illinois is all the varied power. I have seen just about every CN paint scheme from the last 20 years, CN C40-8Ms, SD40-2s, SD40-3s, SD40-2Ws, SD40s in IC, WC GP40s, NS Dash 8s, and occasional UP units. Occasionaly I also see a Wisconsin Southern frieght on the Metra line just north of our house too, but they usually run in the middle of the night. Glad to see you back up and running....

Some really neat stuff Jim. Looks like there are some cool places to shot the action there.

    Jim,
    What's that unit 4th from lead? A first-gen Geep?
What a catch! The rounded cab roof is unmistakable...

GP9RM. Rebuilt in the late 80s (?). CN still has quite a few of those in yard and local service.
