Cleaning up some files, I ran across this hint for improving holding power for MTL couplers: Don't remember where I got it and haven't tried it. I was wondering if anyone has tried this mod and whether it actually improves holding power? Mark
It definitely helps, but is a real pain. I did it to some MTL couplers that I used to convert some Marklin passenger cars, and it certainly helps to prevent the up/down movement referenced.
I used a very small micro bit in a rotary tool. Didn't see any change. We consistently run 50+ car trains, mostly MTL but also AZL and often mixed, with uncoupling, right out of the box. While our trackwork is very good, module transitions using the märklin 8592 Expansion tracks, misalignment and poor relative track end angles can really test them, often watching them have some pretty crazy up and down transitions. But they just keep running. I suspect the much smaller radii, no transitions to curves from straights, grades and grade changes are leading to those with issues.
