Or is it just a rumor? If Penske who is one of the owners of Detroit Diesel would get EMD the problems mey be solved in a hurry. He builds Truck engines designed by Daimler Chrysler and The Daimler engineers may solve the problems in a short matter of time. They have been building Diesel engines for ever and have engineers that put ours to shame. And don't under estimte Caterpillar they are in the same boat.
Art, To this day, I still believe "Cat" makes one of the best diesel engines for in 18 wheelers hands down... I have a few friends that drive truck and I must say riding in their trucks, and also driving their trucks (sshhhh guys I know I know its not very legal) But I can drive them just as if their a pick up truck! And must say the Caterpillar C-12 600 engine is the strongest I've seen yet! And the older 425 "Cat" is a good runner compared to Cummin's or Detroit's 425. All these friends of mine have had all 3 manufactures, and they now are all running some type of "Cat" motor and they are something else with power.. Alot of splitting and shifting, but... I seen alot of noticable differences.... As for train locomotive diesels, if Cat would think and design some diesels for locomotives and strickly for, I'd say they would out sell and out power the diesels used today... They were the first sucessfull diesel manufactures..So, I believe they could design a motor to fit to the locomotive standards...A big thought for the Holt family.... They got a good start and been at since the beginning, I hope to see them get some rather large diesels together for the locomotive departments... Yes . Penske owns part of Detroit Diesel, a NASCAR Team A Cart tean and has an interest in the outfit that builds the Mercedes engine for the McLaren F1 Cars and Penske leasing =trucks and cars and repair shops in either KMart or Walmart the guy is loaded and was a fine racing driver when he was young. And has ties with Mercedes building there 6 cylinder Diesel truck engines. His teams have won the Indy 500 10 times.
