Has anyone tried putting an Intermountain SD40-2 shell on a Kato chassis? Just picked up SD40-2W shell that would be great to get operational.
From everything I've seen/read, you'll need to mill the sides of the Kato mech down to fit an IM shell. The IM is scale width and Kato is a hair wider. Not sure if you'd be able to mill enough and have the motor clear also.
On another forum there is a guy who has put a IM SD45-2 shell on a Kato SD40-2 mechanism. To get the IM SD40-2 shell to fit you would only need to mill the sides as shown in the link below. I would imagine that would be the only milling you'd need to do unless you wanted sound. The method is here: https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=55139.0
